Does anyone know where I can buy just the cross bar (up to 9/10feet long, 3 sections) in Toronto for cheap (<50)? Tried looking in CL and kijiji and no one seems to sell just the cross bar.

Cheap.... not sure you will find a really 'cheap' place for one - but most of the major camera places have them. Try Merkle, and see if you can get a good deal - talk to Patrick.

Couple some dowels together with collars and drill holes in the ends? Quick, dirty and cheap. :D

Yes cheap, because it will be placed at an insecure place overnight. DIY is a possible solution as well.

I am looking at the following, $70 you get the cross bar + stands.

Looks Flimsy, but I'm intrigued. If you buy this do a follow-up on how you find them.
