So it has been announced, nothing different then what the many rumours were already telling us, but still pretty sweet! I know I will be purchasing one of these when available (I currently do not own any tablet). Really want to see how photos look on the retina display!

Has anyone bought the new iPhoto app for the iPad (those with the older versions of the iPad) how is it? does it make a difference over the built in viewer or third party viewers?

Let the discussion/bashing of the iPad begin!

Cheers,

J.

Until YouPorn.com updates it's streams to HD I'm out. The video's are already pixelated enough at the current resolutions.

I'm sure that high resolution retina display will be stellar.

I would have thought even 1600x1200 range is already an overkill. Will the improvement to 2,048 x 1,536 very noticeable?

It's tough to say at that screen size. I know when HDTV's first came out, DVD Players and the TV's themselves didn't have the ability to upconvert the 640x480 resolution of DVD's at the time. This meant that DVD's actually looked WORSE on an HDTV than they did on an SDTV. That was only a jump from 640x480 to 1920x1080. Youtube video's are usually lower quality, stretching them out onto 2048x1536 could yeild some ulgly results. Even downloaded HDTV shows (1920x1080 at most, usually 1280x720) could look pixelated stretched out over 2048x1536.

We'll see I guess.

Nah, you don't need to stretch HD video, just used to the black bars all around the images

I don't have an iPad but I guess this felt a little underwhelming for an "Apple" event. Has the SJ mojo started to leave the building a little? I'm sure they'll sell a butt-load of these but they'd probably sell those if they hadn't added the Retina display.

It's not like the iPad 2 was really that much of a step forward either. Let's face it, most of the recent versions of the iDevices have simply been incremental updates. I have an iPhone 3GS and haven't really felt that either the iPhone 4 or 4S have been huge upgrades; just incremental ones.

The ability to shoot tethered into an iPad would be awesome but the ever elusive USB port is still missing. I have the photo connector kit and can backup SD/CF cards to the iPad but the ability to tether a camera would be sweet.

OS X updates seem a bit incremental too -- except for the deprecation of old models, which is why I'm still on Snow Leopard.

The fact is that the competition is still trying to catch up -- they can take their time developing the next big leap in technology... that is if you don't think Apple is resting on their laurels.

Tim Cook did say that they have bigger things for the rest of the year. Maybe the rumours of them moving into the TV space are true (and they are just playing games with the AppleTV stock levels).

I would say that in the phone space, the competition has already caught up and surpassed Apple's offerings, with the only exception maybe being the offerings at the App store. I've played with some new Android phones and I've been amazed at the level of integration that these devices have. Google translate integrated with text messages? No problem. Voice recognition? Yup, present long before Siri. I know the example I used here is pretty obvious given that it's a Google service integrated with an operating system supported by Google, but as a phone feature (translation + text) it's a feature that's interesting and certainly not so easily available with iOS.

Other than Siri and iCloud, Apple *has* been sitting on their laurels.

I preordered the new ipad 32gb in white to replace my black 16gb ipad2 I got few months ago. I use it mostly for my portfolio to showcase my work to potential clients and it fits into my crumpler camera bag. Also I find 16gb was a little tight in space when I was using the ipad2, with the new ipad's screen I'm sure more space will be better (photos and ultra HD games would require more space!)

James, not sure if this would work with your 40D.

Nice Vee. That would be sweet in the 5D3 in the SD slot. I wonder if it would slow down the work-flow?

I was going to order the parts and play around with it but not at the moment.

Ok I know have a question (it maybe a bit of a stupid question, but I don't care). For displaying photos on your iPad does anybody think it makes a difference if you get the black or the white version? I know a black background around a image tends to make it pop a little more (to the eye), but a white border around an image would be akin to white matting when framed. Thoughts?

White draws the eye to those areas. Just my two cents....

Black unless you are into only 'happy pictures' like baby pictures. I heard the next Ipad will have rainbow frame so they can please everyone. ;)

I'll probably pick up a few bargain "2"'s...I use it as MIDI instruments...I always wanted a Fairlight when I was a kid, but couldn't afford the 20,000...now I can have one for $50!

Yup, got it already (although I also have a real Moog, well, a Realistic MG-1 built by Moog). I also love the Korg iMS-20 (keeping my out for the real one).

Not to mention the Theremin-like apps...certainly easier than playing a real Theremin (I tried the one they have on display at Moog Audio on Queen St.).

Got my iPad this morning - in black! The retina display is stunning! Otherwise it's pretty much the same as my brothers ipad2. So unless the display is really important to you or you need LTE I would say stay with what you have. But if you have a first generation iPad or no iPad like myself you definitely should take a look at this!

Congrats! I agree with you - unless you want to get an ipad, because you didn't have one, or you really really need the retina display - keep your Ipad2. 3G is fast enough for me, and the display is just fine for me.

Don't they run off a flash player?

I have to say I'm really impressed with the retina display, text looks really sharp and crisp. But with that said I don't think you you will see much of a difference in photos on the web between a retina display and a non-retina display. The main reason is most photos on the web are highly compressed and low res and do not take advantage of the retina display. Now showing high res photos you saved to the iPad is a completely different story!
