I'm really interested in seeing how it performs at f2-f3.2 compared to the 85mm 1.4G

I am wondering the same thing! I've always wanted the 85mm. The 1.4 is just to pricey - and wasn't fully sold on the 1.8. If the 1.8 compares well to the 1.4 then I know my next lens purchase!

Here are some sample images.

Here's a short review.

I'd like to mention that henry's has these in stock @ their warehouse, but i don't think they are in stock in stores yet. Nikon rumors did say they started shipping pre-orders already.

Going through the photos and picking out a few samples; it appears to be surprisingly sharp at 1.8/2.0. I can see some chromatic abbheration issues at 1.8 but nothing big. The bokeh can be a bit distracting, it kind of gives you that vertigo effect when theres a lot of trees in the background. All in all though, it seems to be a fantastic lens for the money.

This lens finally came in the store! I put the Nikon 85/1.8G on a Nikon D7000 and compared it to a Canon 7D with Canon 85/1.8.

First overall impressions:
Canon 7D with Canon 85mm was definitely half a second to a second faster focusing from minimum to infinity.
The lens is well built, same quality as Nikon 50/1.4G.
Very sharp at 1.8. IMO, sharper than Canon equiv.
Bokeh is mediocre though. Kind of like the Canon equiv. But I guess I'm spoiled with the 85L.

I would say that this is pretty good lens for the basic consumer. Pros look elsewhere. But for the price, I would just get the 50/1.8G. You're not missing much.

for those in the know: is the 85 F/1.4 worth the extra money over this 85 F/1.8? thanks.

The 85/1.4G isn't worth the money, IMO. I would get the 85/1.4D.

i have the non-D and although it's not af-s, i think it's more than adequate. i have tried the 85 1.4 and it's signficantly larger (and pricier) than the 1.8.
haven't tried af-s though.

Have used both versions of the 1.4 (but not the earlier mf one) and imo, the AF-S is worth the upgrade. I think the 85 1.4 D has attained mythical status, not unlike the 28 1.4, for reasons I can't fathom. It's a nice sharp lens but sharpness alone doesn't cut it for me. I for one love the clutch on the G lenses even though I can't use them on my film cameras, save for the F100. For much of how I shoot, not needing to disengage the M-A is a blessing sent from above (if one were of that mind).

Here we go:

AF-S 85mm f/1.4G on D3X
Image

AF-s 85mm f/1.8G on D3X

If you can live with the bokeh, this lens really is sharp. Pretty impressive at f2.

From the looks of it 1.8 wins for value :)

At $1000 difference, I can 8). It's only really annoying with complex backgrounds.
