I just picked up a 580 EX II not long ago, but can't really say that I am making the most use of it yet. Does anyone have tips or tricks for flash photography?

Your question is a little too broad to be answered effectively. It's kind of like saying "how do I take good photos?". Anyhow, here's a couple of resources that may get you started:
- http://www.amazon.com/Speedliters-Handb ... 032171105X

I've used both, and I personally learned a bit more from the book just because it goes into a bit more light theory to help you understand what's going on with strobes.

Once you get an idea of how to make the most out of your flash on the camera and are considering using it off camera pick up Joe McNally's "Hot Shoe Diaries". I cannot recommend this book enough; It includes a lot of practical advice on taking some really impressive photos with one or just a few speedlights.

The Speedliter's Handbook is essentially a Canon-focused version of the Hot Shoe Diaries, written by a different author.

The Speedliter's Handbook is a must for any Canon Flash shooter. Great book!
