Kind of disappointed with such a high megapixel count. I expected D3S-like high ISO performance, this is making me think it's not gonna happen.

Yeah, it seems too much of a jump, when Nikon seems to be killing in the low iso department right now with sensors not so tightly packed. With the D7000 at 16.2, it seemed a 24mp sensor, along the lines of the competitors, would be next. 36MP seems like a huge push. If they can keep the low light abilities, then maybe thei'r going after the medium format market too, but i would expect them to lead with the D4, not the D700 replacement.

Not sure how to really explain this one but the purpose of an optical antialiasing filter is to remove artifacts when downsampling from a high resolution to a lower one. In this case, when you look at an object you can treat it as an infinitely high resolution captured to a lower resolution such as camera A ... say 6000x4000 pixel resolution

Say you are looking at a diagonal line. when captured on a camera, the sensor is effectively downsampling it to a finite resolution. On a sensor without the AA filter, the line when magnified will look like it was created by a bunch of clear pixels, you'll see "pixel steps". Zoom out and the line will look very sharp but may not look very smooth. Kind of like when you oversharpen a photo.

Put an AA filter over the sensor and it will correct for these pixel artifacts effectively blurring the line.

What's the advantage with an optical AA filter? You can sharpen your images later.

Many point and shoot cameras (not sure about nowadays if this is true) do not have AA filters.

I'll see if I can find an example somewhere.

This is my understanding of antialiasing to correct for aliasing artifacts when downsampling from a high resolution to a lower one - someone chime in if I'm talking nonsense :)

in a nutshell, removing an aa filter = higher resolution = sharper images but at the cost of increased moire and other artifacts...

old comparison using a D200 with and without AA filter

Hrm.. Interesting. I would probably prefer the one without the AA filter.
