So I bought a new 7D yesterday. (YAY!!) I've been tinkering with it since I got the battery fully charged. Trying to understand the new functions. It's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay vastly different from my 10D.

I just had a few questions I thought I'd ask for anyone who may have owned the 10D - 20D and the 7D. I noticed that the shutter button isn't a "hard" mechanical button. The 7D's shutter button is...how do I explain it...springy. It's not like my 10D and assuming the same for the 20D that when you fully press the shutter, it feels like a regular button click (half press to a full press then complete stop). The 7D's button doesn't give you that "tactile" feeling of the half press and the full press.

Another thing, the mirror slap sounds weird. Again, almost as if it's being cushioned when it goes up. The 10D's mirror slap really feels like it's a hard mechanical slap.

Are these normal?

hard to tell, as I've never noticed a difference between the button feel, but shutter sounds different to the rebel series. That's all i know, damn great tool of a camera though. If it takes good pictures and works then just use it and don't worry about it. That's unless you're an engineer, in this case I can't help you

Hahahah!! No no. It works like a charm. :D I'm down with the fever at the moment so I can't really go outside and shoot stuff. But I took images of stuff in the house that my other camera normally has issues taking. One thing for sure is that I love the 19 point AF system on this. The ability to choose an area of focus instead of a single point really comes in nice. It almost feels as if the camera knows what you want to focus on.

Edit: One thing I did find out is that the new CR2 format isn't compatible with LR2. I need to upgrade my LR3 and my PS. :?

You can use UFRAW or any one of a number of raw processors until that time.

The shutter button is reportedly the same one as the 1D series, and is meant to help reduce the occurrences of button stabbing and the associated slight camera shake. You're supposed to just squeeze lightly. It takes a while but when you get used to it, it becomes the most natural thing in the world.

Reviews and price. I really wanted to get a used 430EX or even a 420EX at the time. But when I found out that the Metz was comparable to the 580EX for a fraction of the price of the Canon, I decided to get that one.

Curious for the Metz, is it compatible with the 7D's in menu flash settings menu? Meaning can you change your flash settings such as 2nd curtain/compensation etc via the 7d menu?

 I got the Metz when I had the 10D. I have not tried this yet...actually...not sure how to yet. I'll let you know when I get home.

As far as the Camera Menu functions it all depends on what type of camera you have. With my 7D I can go to "Flash Contol" then go to "Extrenal Flash CustomFunction" and Change the shutter sync to 1st curtain /2nd curtain/Hi-speed, also change the FEC, change the ETTL II from Evaluative to Average, enable/disable the wireless function, Manually zoom the flash reflector. This can be done with both the Metz and the Canon ! However with the Canon, I can also enable the FEB(flash exposure bracketing) from the camera not with the Metz.

Does this sorta help? I dont have a lot of experience with my ext flash unit.

OMFG!! I didn't know the 7D or the Metz can do that. As soon as I saw this reply I was like, "Huuuwwhhhaaaat!?!"

Needless to say, I scrambled through the manual of the ext flash and the 7D, tried it and yes it bloody works. :D

Oh I'm better now. No more fever and stuff. Just the regular Fall sinus conditions. Runny nose and stuff. :P

Well, it's only been a few days. I haven't gotten the chance to really take it out for a real spin. I'm just finding out little bits and pieces like what PotatoEye has mentioned.

There is something I am trying to find though. I thought I read somewhere online that if you focus on a single point and you decide to rotate your camera from say landscape to portrait, the point of focus follows. I'm looking for it but I'm thinking I may have read wrong. :?

search for orientation linked AF point.

The idea here is that when you hold the camera in different orientations, different AF points previously selected, stay selected.

(e.g. selected left most in portrait, then go landscape, select right most, when you rotate back to portrait, the AF point reverts to left most again).

Also, you can have 3 different home points set up for the 3 orientations.

setting the home point is a very good thing to do.

Ahh...Yeah. I may have misunderstood what I read then. I'll look this up. Thanks Mike!
