Which body to get? taking pics of my non-stop kids. For the price difference, D7K focus is fast enough? good skin color?

thanks!

Small difference, but the D300s has a slight advantage in focus speed, wheras the d7000 wins in low light capabilities, skin tones, and metering is pretty much identical, but I'd give the D7000 a slight nod in that direction over the 300s.

I have lots of experience shooting both for nature and wildlife photography.

How about the difference of:

Nikon D7000 comes with a new TTL exposure metering with 2016-pixel RGB sensor, while D300s has the older 1005-pixel RGB sensor. Big improvement or marketing?

And 15 vs. 9 cross-type sensors? important? useful? accurate? I feel this is the problem with my D90, I have to use center focus point and miss a lot of shots...

As a former d90 owner, and current d7000 owner. Here's my 2 cents.

The d300s AF is supposedly slightly faster than the d7000 according to all comparisons I've read. I can't imagine the d300s having AF that much faster than the d7000. The d7000's AF speed is fairly quick imo. I've never used a d300s, so I can't give an honest opinion on that. The d7000's AF is definitely faster than the d90's, and more accurate. The d7000's 9 cross points are all in the middle. I don't think I could go back to using a d90. I find I like everything about the d7000 better. The only thing I don't like about the d7000, is the AF assist light. It only works when using the center AF point. I don't remember if the d90 was like that or not.

I don't have kids, but I would say its fast enough to shoot kids (no pun intended). I have shot kids running around, and I don't really have issues with the AF keeping up. Just remember, AF speed depends on the lens you're using as well.

your AF light only comes on when you use the center AF point? mine comes on regardless of what point i'm using. unless i'm completely misunderstanding you in which case i want to know more.

I also shoot a D7000 and its pretty good for color metering, skin tones, AF speed, and all the other things youre talking about.
many many review websites have pegged it the best DX camera Nikon has ever made.
I've also been taking pictures of our friend's kids who have the worlds best high powered batteries installed in them and the D7000 keeps up with them no problem. AF is fast, accurate, and quite intuitive.
but i do agree it also depends on what lens youre using. i use a 50mm 1.8 but but AF on the D7000 is really fast even on a 18-105mm 3.5-4.5.

Yes the Af assist light only comes on when using the center af point. The af assist light will come on on all points, only if you use an auto mode, or auto af points. The light will not come on when you use af-c or when you manually select an af point other than the middle one.

aah thanks for the clarification. i've never noticed that when selecting a specific AF point. i'll have to try that.
is that a known issue or has nikon provided some quirky explanation why that happens?

Must be a Nikon mindset. It only comes on when the centre is selected on my D80 as well.

It's not good for much unless your subjects enjoy being blinded. Actually, I have used it as a flashlight at times.

... And to re-approach the topic, I have already decided on upgrading to the D7000, it's just finding the right moment to pick one up.

Both cameras are good ... If you take a bad photo with either its because you took a bad photo not the camera .. I personally prefer the bigger 300s body but I'll shot either camera any day
