why do you need a 7D for portraits and landscapes?

Those things don't move fast.

T2i will suffice.

None of the things you want to shoot justify either cameras.

Spend your money on good glass.

Canon vs Nikon? Doesn't matter.

the pros and cons vary depending on who you ask. Nikon lenses are much better than Canon's and nikon cameras are much better for things that dont sit still but Canon cameras are better if you're going to consistently shoot for gigantic billboards and wall murals. Thats the only condition under which you really could use the extra 3-4 megapixels that canon shooters brag about. Dont fall for the megapixel myth otherwise: most of the times shooters dial down their image sizes and in so doing dial down the available megapixels. i've lost count of how many people brag about the added canon megapixels as the first feature when they tell me about their camera only for me to learn they do the bulk of their shooting in small basic JPEGs because their memory cards slow down too much with anything more serious.
nikon sensors also meter much more accurately in color compared to canon.
price point wise each manufacture has a near equal counterpart in terms of features, etc.

unless you're shooting for a specific reason, none of this matters really, its important you like the feel of the camera and perhaps the better advice i can give you is buy what your friends have because you can benefit from their experience with that brand. you may also be able to borrow what they have and see if you like it before you buy it or buy something else instead.

i own a nikon D7000. i love it and have never regretted shelling out the $1000 i spent on it. i researched a lot before buying it and incidentally i was sold on the idea of this camera when i spoke to an acquaintance in Canon's DSLR department and he told me the D7000 is the best camera nikon has ever made and years ahead in some of the features compared to anything canon has. when a canon employee gives such an ovation to a rival product that falls within my budget there really is no excuse for me not to take the advice seriously.

wow..

however i somewhat agree with getting the brand your friends have. it's easier to bug friends about camera features.

Hahaha yeah, a bit biased there. As a Nikon shooter, I would say go to the store, play with both cameras, and pick whichever one feels best in your hand.

Most of my friends had other brands, and thats still the case - sometimes I am the solo Nikon guy in the crowd... with the others shooting Sony and Canon.

Buy what works for you - try them out, play with them, take a look at some images if you want - bing a memory card with you, and ask the sales clerk if you can take some sample pictures.

I own the D7000 and all I can say is that it does not dissapoint.

Haha, lately I have been noticing that people who have Nikons tend to be over protective about the brand and bash Canon a lot more than happy Canonites  just an observation

I personally could never get into the whole Nikon vs. Canon thing. I have such an eclectic collection of camera's -- the best camera is the one that works for you! Thats always been my philosophy.

Thats how I chose nikon and my sister chose canon. It all depends on how comfortable you are holding the camera.

About the friends thing, true, and you can borror their lens. I trade with my friends quite often...save some bucks.

yes i am a nikon shooter: guilty as charged.
but in all honesty both brands are great, so go with what feels better for you and think about the button positions and how quickly you can change settings on the fly because sometimes these things really do matter.
someone's also talked about the ability to borrow lenses from your friends and i couldnt agree more. its saved me a lot of money to try first and then buy (or not buy depending on your experience with it).
cheers,

perhaps, and I have a counter observation apart from the bashing aspect. one of my personal pet peeves is when people start to talk technical but when they have no idea of the significance of what theyre saying. for example a lot of new canon DSLR owners will bleat on about megapixels because they fell for the sales pitch at the store counter. then us nikon shooters have to deal with the "why did you buy that when you could have had 587 megapixels?"
i have to confess i just chuckle to myself nowadays.
but even understanding the technical aspects of both brands i can tell you if i were to start all over again and if i bought a canon, i'd be more than happy. after all, i did shoot a canon point and shoot for years and loved it. i still do and in fact its still in my camera bag all the time. the bottom line is that theyre both great and there are an equal number of pros that shoot one or the other.

What prompted me to get the Canon is because of what most of you guys have said. Friends with benefits...uh...err...not that kind of benefits. The borrow the lens or body type. Good grief this can be taken in a whole new world of context wouldn't it?

D7000 is probably more camparable to 60D

7D is more comparable to D300s

Just saying :D

Hey, lots of people say the d7000 is equivalent to the d300s! :)

I thought.. aside from the pro layout/body, performance wise.. the 7000 was better? In terms of sensor performance, I would agree with Rhommel, it definitely looks like these cameras aren't on the same level
