Hey there!

I currently shoot with a Nikon D300.

I am upgrading and can't decide on whether to go with the Nikon D3s or the D700.

I would be grateful for suggestions!

Thanks!

Chandra

As always what do you shoot? You can buy 2 D700's for the price of a D3s if you need a backup camera. Or you can get a D700 and a lens or two.

If you have the cash to be asking about a D3s though, in my mind it's a no brainer go with the D3s.

If you need some help more info would help out....

Cheers,
Scott

Also what are you looking for in a camera that you need to upgrade from a D300? Faster focus? Better ISO?

Also if you upgrade and don't have much FX lenses, you'll need those as well. You can still shoot with DX lenses but you may as well stay with your D300.

wow, if you can afford the D3s, it's certainly the better camera!
That thing is a legend already and can shoot in the dark!

I know it is usually a fool's game to wait for the next generation, but this is Nikon's year for upgrades. Both the D4 and D800 are expected sometime this summer. Which ever you buy now will be replaced before the end of 2011. Can you wait until the summer?

If you must go now, go D3S, it has the newest technology and the newer sensor.

I was all decided on the D3s. Not the D3, but the D3s so that I can stick with the same lenses.

Now, so many people trying to steer me towards the D700.

My D300 is SO OLD. And it just doesn't seem to be fast enough anymore and the focus is funky sometimes.

All I shoot is babies - they don't move really.....lol

But I do this so much and all my clients are becoming so high end sometimes they have a better camera than I do.

I don't like focus lock and recompose. So I only have the 26 focus points on the D300 and it's not enough sometimes.

Sometimes those babies smile and I only have a 1/4 second to catch that smile.

OK stop right there.... listen to yourself. "My clients are becoming so high end sometimes they have a better camera than I do" .... so what! They are paying you to do the work. If they really didn't trust your skills, they would be doing it themselves.

Its not about the camera - its about the end result. Do you deliver what the client wants?

I recently went through the exact same thought process you are going through. I was all set to sell of my D300s and D700, and get a D3s, but I spent a weekend going a hard think about what my shooting is, and whether the D3s was really going to make be a better photographer. In the end, I said to myself ... no its not going to make a difference, and what I have works really well... The D700 is stellar, and anyone that says that the D700 is OLD technology is completely full of shit. The D1 is old technology, and not worth the time of day. The D700 performs really well, and is essentially a smaller version of the D3. It might not have quite the same AF capabilities, but it performs really well.

Anyhow -- if it were me - I'd get a D700. But honestly, you might take a look at what glass you are using -- because having good glass makes all the difference.

The D3, D3s, D3x, and D700 are all FX (full frame) sensors.

Are you confusing the D3s with the D300s?

I guess I should do my own research - both Henrys and Merkles told me that the Ds was not full frame.

I just looked it up and you're right.

That made my decision - stick with the D300.

My D300 is my only professional body. I only have the D90 in my camera bag so I need a second professional body.

You're right also that it's not the camera it's what you do with the camera.

This is great news anyway because I need a new wide angle lens - do not like my Tokina - it's the only lens I cheaped out on and regret it now.

Wow...a lot of the Santa stands in the malls were still shooting D70 (non S), that camera must be B.C. with your time line.

If Santa is still shooting with a D70, ask yourself this...are you really going to be making that much more going from a D300 to the latest and greatest?

I know a lot of people here tends to upgrade almost every year or so. Don't know how they do it, but all the power to them if and when they do.

I must be old school, but, I like to use my equipment until it breaks down and I only have 2 D2h's and a D70s but non of my customers or agencies complain when I had them the results. More $$$ in my pocket and less in Henry's or wherever I buy my gear.

Good luck on your choice.

I agree. People seem to upgrade bodies sooner than needed. Better to spend money on better glass. Unless someone has specific needs like a higher FPS for sports photography or more megapixels for enlarging landscape photos, Most people upgrade bodies too soon....well, at least the people you encounter on gear sites.

based on your sell/buy postings, is it safe to assume that you are bored often? :)

if the OP is looking for a back up body, you might also want to consider the D7000. Not "professional" designation but it's comparable to the D300s in specs and technology. And in some ways, better!

Good suggestion .. I have a D7000 as a backup body - although funny thing is that lately I have been using it as my main body, but that is mostly because I am learning how it shoots, and playing around with some of the functions. I actually really like the D7000 as a main camera, and once I put the grip on it, I like it even more.
