Hi, have a friend who needs an inexpensive negative scanner, can anyone recommend one? She saw an ION for $69 at The Source. Never even heard of that brand before. Any comments please.

I think most of those cheapo film scanners are just a cheap 5MP camera (or somesuch) pointed at the film holder. They probably don't have the same resolution as a proper scanner.

A 'real' film scanner is probably over the average budget.

The flatbed is a good compromise, but I would suggest not picking up the cheapest. Scanning film is pretty tedious and the more you can scan at one time will preserve both your own sanity, and your desire to continue scanning. I believe most of us scan with at least one level above the entry level film compatible scanner.

Do you consider the Epson V300 above to be an entry level scanner or middle of the road?

Go for the V500 better and bigger scanning bed.as it is a step above and has been supplanted by the V600 so is only a few dollars more

The V300 is their lowest end and only scans one strip of 35mm at a time.

The V500 scans two strips at a time ( thus, a roll of 36 frames can be done in three loads), and also medium format.

My v300 scan 2 strips of 35mm at a time(12frames) or 1 four frame strip of medium formate.

I could be wrong on my model number though.

Is it the physical size of the scanning bed that is the limiting factor or is it some sort of film frame detection on the V300 that limits you to one strip at a time? I would have thought you could load up the scanning bed (8.5 x 11) full of negatives.

It's the size of the backlight located on the lid.

The scanners I have worked with have all had the light come from the underside of the scanning bed glass, do negative scanners backlight the negative from the lid too?

I have an old HP scanner that had this triangular standalone thingy that had mirrors in it, for scanning negs. It was only big enough for one negative a time though - I never even tried it out.

It sounds like the new ones are way better...

I had one of the <$100 HP scanjets which has a dedicated film holder at the top lid and could scan 4 frames and they were terrible. Scans were very grainy.

I now use an Epson v500, which gives excellent results. Now that I'm shooting a lot more film, I should have saved up for a v700 :(

Sadly, to the best of my knowledge, that scanner is no longer being made and Nikon isn't making any further neg scanners :(

Is the V330 a newer (better) version of the V300? I can't seem to find anything to indicate if it is or not. Anyone know?
