Right now, I have the LX-3 as a secondary camera and do enjoy this camera quite a bit. I looked at some reviews of the LX-5 and although the comments were generally excellent, I cannot tell whether the images are really better in quality. Some people have talked about a poor jpeg engine in the LX-5 and the colours being not as accurate. Is this part of the reason?

Does anyone know how the new camera compare to the old one?

I found a great deal on the LX-5 and am considering it.

The LX3 is a phenomenal camera. I tried getting one for a long time until i ended up with a Nikon p6000.

I've had the LX5 since August.

I really like how easy it is to roll the dial with my right thumb to quickly change aperture/shutter speed, and it's been nice to finally be able to have a camera with manual controls that I can carry in my pocket.

But...I've found quite a few negatives with this particular camera.

The first one I got had a dead pixel in the sensor so I had to exchange it. But the more serious issues with this camera is lens flare. I've often wondered if an affordable lens hood is available anywhere. And yep, the auto white balance on this camera I've found to be horrendous.

I doubt it would serve as much of an upgrade if you already have an LX3.

Just my 2 cents :)

i had lx3 before i went to GF1 - if i were you I would not upgrade to Lx5 - its too similar. This space is changing fast with larger sensor offering coming to market so you might want to stick with what you have for now.

I looked at a micro 4/3rds camera, and if I am gonna be swapping lenses, and carrying something that big, I'll just take my DSLR's instead.

The LX-5 fits in my jacket pocket, and I can tell already I am gonna have an awful lot of fun playing with this camera. And it'll be great to record passing trains, when I am out shooting them with my DSLR.

to each his own

GF2 btw which will be available in a month is not much bigger than lx5 and if I want truly pocketable I would not go lx5 since it has a lens protruding, S95 is more pocketable

At the end of the day if I want a big quality jump from my iphone 4 camera, m43 or bigger sensor is the way to go and it is much much smaller than DSLR

the 4/3 isn't the only "bigger sensor" out there, there is a lot of APS-C p&s cameras starting to come into the market, give it a year or two and it will be a standard

+1 For my next 'pocket camera' I'm looking for the IQ of at least a m43 system and the size of an s95. I'm sure it will be along soon enough.

It's nice to see competition in the m43/aps-c/etc sensor size market but it's frustrating that they are all not adapting a standard. That is what the m43 system is/was supposed to be but now Sony, Samsung, etc have created their own systems - it goes back to the old " hmm .. do I want to invest in m43 system or Sony or Samsung?" .. ugh.
