Vistek has a good deal on 580EX II ($419) the lowest I've seen so far. I was wondering if anyone knows if this is because the rumours about a new Canon flash may be true. Anyone?

Almost all rumours about something new coming out are eventually true. Does that help?

Very unlikely.. the Canon flashes available now are all very good already.

Thank you all.

Optical slave, TTL following slave, GN Priority manual. Just look at the SB-800/SB-900 features the Canon's lack.

There's a reason why many Strobists mix Nikon flashes with Canon gear. The Canon's are excellent flashes when operating in E-TTL mode but have quite limited non-TTL capabilities.

less RF noise, so the pocketwizard mini and flex will work without extra shielding

Unfortunately, that's not true. Canon has a long way to go to make them good. Especially in TTL mode...

It's going to be $399 at Aden for boxing day 2010 sale. Get them while you can. What can they possibly add to the flash to improve it? I do find that Canon's flash system is not as accurate as Nikon's for a quick setup. Nikon's system you just attach the flash and shoot and your exposures are quite accurate. With Canon you have to fiddle with flash compensation.

it's not flash's problem, it's metering system
