I am wondering if you guys know any good remotes for Canon system (40D) that will be lockable and maybe programmable for long exposures over 30", would also be good if I could use bracketing with it. Mainly looking for a cheaper version of the Canon one. Wired is ok, as long as I can see the duration on it.

Something like an aftermarket TC-80N3?

I bought a third-party remote release from somebody - it worked but the plug didn't seem to fit correctly as it was a bit loose. I'd say just keep looking on the for sale sites for a used Canon remote and get that - which is what I ended up doing.

what about the Yongnuo ones? They have a knockoff TC-80, I know they make their stuff better quality than others

At exposures that long, you can just use your watch and a lockable release cable.
Why spend money on an electronic gadget that can fail?
Just my two old fashion cents...
Oops, maybe the camera can't accomodate a cable, didn't think of that.

A watch like that would cost as much as the release itself, since I don't own any at the moment, and we're talking about $35-60 for the thing

If its for occasional use then go third party. You will pay a quarter the cost and it should serve you well.

If you will be using it regularly or for paying gigs then go for the Canon. The reliability is what your paying for. I have had third party products fail on shoots before and end up cursing at myself for not spending a few more bucks.

I bought an ebay knockoff for ~70 a few years ago and it's worked flawlessly.
