Hi guys, I tried searching, but didnt come up with much. Here is my problem. I have a nikon 18-105mm (f3.5-5.6) lens that came with my camera. The plastic mount part of the lens is broken. I have another lens that has a metal mount part and I was wondering if that part can be purchased and replaced? is it worth doing this, or will it bee to expensive to replace?

Thanks!

Get it fixed at Sun Camera. Call them up for an estimate.

just be mindful that it may cost more than it is worth (assuming this is a standard kit lens). If it is it may be cheaper to replace with a used one.

Can't hurt to get an estimate but most likely it won't be worth it. Good excuse to upgrade to a better lens. :)

It might help if you could describe why that part is broken in the first place-- did you drop the lens? If so, there may be more than just that plastic piece that is broken or at least will need a recalibration as a drop might have knocked something out of place. Like thericyip said, it doesn't hurt to get a quote. Anyways, if you've been searching for the part and can't find any it's probably because they only sell replacement parts to repair shops which again points to going in to get a quote... good luck!

I was about to say it as I read the first few replies, until I realized it was already said!

so, i searched a bit more, and the part is available from ebay or nikon for about $20-30 bucks max. the part that broke is the mount on the lens. it broke when putting the lens on, the camera/lens was never dropped.

i will take it into a shop and see how much they charge for the repair.

sun camera is a bit out of the way for me, can anyone recommend a shop in mississauga or downtown toronto (preferably walking distance from union station, or on a streetcar/subway route)

Thanks!

There is Nikon Canada at Dixie/401, and they sell parts too.

I took my Nikon 18-105 VR in for an estimate at Nikon Canada and they wanted to charge me $170 for the repair. Not worth it in my view.

It depends on what you'll get to replace it. In my view if you're going to replace it with the same lens then you might as well get the one you have repaired... that's assuming you believe the broken mount is not indicative of any other damage. If you're using this as an excuse to upgrade, then by all means!

BTW as a Canon shooter it seems to me the Nikon 35mm f1.8 is a nice lens for crop bodies for not much more than $170, assuming you like primes. But then, I suppose a Nikon shooter here would be able to find other ways to spend your money :)
