Had chance to test out my new 85mm 1.4 this weekend in Niagara.

Some samples...

No sharpening, all wide open and only a slight levels adjustment on some of the images, other than that they are all straight from the camera and re-sized.

I should qualify the lens my opening sentence. I just bought a Rokinon 85mm 1.4 from Amazon.com for $300 all in.

I could buy 8 of these for the price of the new Nikon G

Great bargin if you don't mind mf. this lens has cult status on the fredmiranda forums...

Indeed this lens has quite the cult following. It has several other brand names, including Bower, Vivitar, and others.

I heard about this lens manual focus manual aperture not a motor at all on the lens. But for still photography it is supposed to be awesome.

Might be a good skill sharpening lens.

No it's a Rokinon 85mm 1.4. It's manual focus and is very reasonably priced and looks even better now that the dollar is getting closer to parity. Should of waited a week. :P

Does Amazon.com deliver to Canada? For some reason I thought they only delivered to the US.

Thanks

It depends on what you're ordering. For camera equipment it's not a problem. They ship via USPS, took about a week and a half to arrive.

This lens will not meter on D40's and D'60's, right? Full manual mode only?

Sure if you want to wait 4 weeks till I break out my xmas lights.

Honestly if you're budget conscious and don't mind manual focus this is a great lens to have.

Depends on the version of the lens. There apparently is one with "AE" in the model number for Nikon mount. This one IS chipped, enabling metering with sub-D200 bodies like the D40 and D60. The unchipped one will not meter on less than a D200.

An MF lens with a chip is technically called AI-P compatible in Nikon speak.

Cameta Camera, through Amazon, is offering a lens 'with Automatic Chip' that costs ~$50 more than the unchipped lens. Metering may just be worth the $50.

Thanks for the useful info, dant and hotwire.

I've been looking at getting the new Nikon 85mm 1.4 but after seeing your pictures I'm going to rethink that decision. Could put up with the manual focus and put that extra money elsewhere. Is there image stabilization on this lens?

Which vendor did you get it from, Cameta Camera? I'm debating between this or the Sigma 85 for my D700. Would there be any difference between the chipped/no-chipped version on D700? I'm guessing no as I can enter the info in the menu items which should cover metering.

Yes, Cameta is selling chipped Rokinon one and marked with "UMC" on barrel.
