I must be retarded or something because I can't seem to fold my westcott umbrella up with the removable black cover on it. When I first got it, it came wrapped up in the sleeve with the cover on. The only thing holding the cover in place is a screw-in knob at the top and the tension of the umbrella when it is open. once it's collapsed, it unhooks from the edges and just becomes a mess.

Is there something I'm missing here?

As the uncle of a mentally-handicapped child I find your use of "retarded" quite offensive.

Don't unhook before folding, just leave it on and fold (at least that's how it works with my umbrella).

even if you leave it hooked on, it will become a mess. You gotta get more practice, get experienced at putting big things in small spaces

Don't read into it then. Seriously. There is no malice in his use of the word, only increased sensitivity on your end. That doesn't mean all uses of the word must be censored in your presence.

Better quality umbrellas will have tighter tolerances. I don't think you are doing anything wrong .. it's just a build/quality issue with your particular umbrella.

I've found that turning the umbrella while pressing it in to make more compact helps get it inside the sleeve

It's a basic Alien Bee shoot through/white umbrella,

Is this a compact Westcott or a conventional one? I have one of each 43" at home and can check it out later for you. I don't seem to recall any issues with them.

after reading the reviews on that page, it seems to be a design flaw. ah well. you get what you pay for.

I have the identical 43" collapsible, although mine is two years old. I opened it, and closed it and put it back in the black sleeve it comes with - no issues. I know what you describe but my black cover stays put on the ends of the spline tips.

Contact Westcott directly - they are very responsive.

Tell them you tried putting the cover on your shaft but your shaft was too small so it kept slipping off.

that's not my problem james(serendipity), the cover won't fit on the head :p
I've had it for over a year, i doubt they would send a replacement. but I guess I can try calling and see what they have to say.

Have you ever removed the black cover on yours Jamesy?

I have removed it many times as I tend to use the shoot-through rather than the reflective aspect of the umbrella.

Not everything involving a small shaft has to be about a Trojan product.

Clearly your experiences differ from mine.

Nope, that's not "increased sensitivity" that's recognizing oppressive language when one sees it. The use of ableist language isn't okay and 13inches was right to call it out. There may not be malice intended, but it doesn't make it any more okay to use ableist language as it contributes to a culture that devalues and makes fun of people who are differently-abled.

Disagree ... calling it out empowers the words. Plus being the unlce is slightly removed as opposed to being the parent. People should learn how to pick their battles and realize intent vs. colloquial sayings.

Besides, OP called himself retarded which is perfectly fine.

Well... I do say to my kids that it's not just the word used, but it's intent. But some words have become permanently attached with intent, no matter how it's used. So no matter how inoffensive the user meant it, it is still offensive. How many visible minorities(or others) have issues with particular words, that have multiple meanings, but the first one that comes to mind is the offensive one. I don't have issue with the word "retarded", but that's the problem. I'm not sensitive to it's effect/intent as I don't have a stake in it. I see that it is offensive to some, so have made an effort to be sensitive to it's use and the use of other words. Language evolves as should our use of it. For example, I have no issue with using the f word, but not around children or in a business setting. It's not so much political correctness, but just being nice.

Damn...I'm Canadian.

There are many colloquial saying that are now considered very rude where they were once extremely commonly used.

Damn, I'm not Canadian. I grew up in a very "white area" of Mississauga in the 70s, and experienced racism first hand (and I'm talking it started with words and ended in blood). So if there is one thing I've learned, reacting to words empowers those words. There are so many other things to get upset about, this is sooooo small potatoes.

Retarded is offensive to some, sure. But while it is loosely used as in "are you slow?", doesn't the expression itself carry the same impact? How do you slow/delay the timing on an engine? You retard the timing. How do you say delay in French?

I wonder which came first, the current offensive meaning or the original meaning describing slow? Like gay was widely used for happy, and queer was widely used for strange. I actually still use the latter, just to see peoples' reaction ... it's always funny. "Greg didn't eat his lunch today? Hmm, isn't that queer."

This is such a small point to niggle with, I'm surprised it has been pointed out. Way worse things have been noted on here without a peep from others.

And where is it that people work where f-bombs are not experienced??? Church? I've yet to work for a company where it isn't used.

Can't believe the hoopla about the word retard used as a self description, that's just absurd.

I agree, OP wasn't using it to describe someone else.
