I've had both lenses in the past (actually I still have the 17-70) and the copy I had of the 18-200 was sharp, but in general I would say the 17-70 is a better lens overall. Even though these are decent lenses I'm going to recommend a different lens mainly due to these lenses not having a constant aperture. It can be frustrating when you zoom in on a subject and you need the light gathering performance 2.8 or faster but since you are zoomed in the maximum aperture is now F4.5. So my recommendation is to get a zoom that has a constant aperture of 2.8 or faster. On a limited budget I would look at the Tamron 17-50 2.8. I would also get the 50mm 1.8 since it is very affordable and fast, but you will have to be creative since it is not a zoom lens. Hope this helps.

a used Canon 50mm 1.8 will serve you well. It will not only introduce you to fixed aperture and prime lens photography, but force you to be creative (as noted above).

Perhaps a sigma 24-70 or 18-50. I would try and and go used, plenty of good equipment out there.

Thank you Seren Dipity and Jlax.
Yes, I would definately want that plastic fantastic Canon 50mm 1.8. :D For that price I couldn't ask for more. That's why I thought it would be good if the other lens had a zoom. I was looking at the Tamron 2.8 as well, but its coverage is almost the same as the kit lens, except on the wide end it's 17mm instead of 18mm.

The Sigma 24-70mm? I don't know. I like landscapes so I would like to keep it wide, top of that, I think even used that lens would be over my budget.

At Henrys they said there is a new Sigma 17-70 that just arrived to their warehouse with OS and f 2.8-4. That's half a stop less at the zoom end than the non OS version. It's $150 more but really makes me think....
I know. I should deicde what I want and purchase one good lens. And get another one later to expand the range. But what can I say. I want it all :-)

The only "good one"s among what you mentioned are the 50, 24-70 and Tamron 17-50

I wouldn't say the 17-70 is a bad lens. I still use it on my crop camera and other than it not having a constant aperture it's a great lens. I'm sure the latest OS version is good as well. The good thing about Henry's is that they have a decent return policy so if you don't like it you won't be stuck with it.

Tamron 17-50 and Canon 50mm f/1.8 will do.

Also compare prices on www.photoprice.ca and then get your retailer of choice to price match.

You guys are awsome! Thank you for all your help!

I think I'm going to go with the Tamron 17-50 and Canon 50. The agony of making a decision is over. Now I just have to find the best price :-)

Thank you!

I've had 3 different 50's the nifty, 1.4 and now the Tak. Out of all of these I really love the Tak the most, even though it's manual
