IS there anywhere in T.O. that does this conversion?

I have a spare body and I would like to give this type of photography a try.

Looking forward to your replies.

Depending on the camera why not DIY.

I have a D40x I've been wanting to convert too. DIY is possible but I'd rather have someone who's done it before handle it.

Because it depends greatly on the camera, some DIY IR is greatly complicated. That unused camera could become unusable.

A lot of sites seem to point to http://www.lifepixel.com in the U.S or buy stuff from them for the conversion. It costs about as much as your camera is worth - or more. If anyone does do a conversion, I would like to know how it turns out.

I'd try, but I wouldn't know where to begin.

More so, like someone mentioned, I'd like to able to use it, so I wouldn't want to risk doing permanent damage.

Yeah, I was on there website a while ago. I'd rather spend my money locally. There has to be somebody in T.O. that does it.

I would too, if they didn't have to buy parts from lifepixel and jack up the price.

You have to have a certain amount of posts before you can view/use the classifieds - I think it's 15... not sure. It's a good rule, we like it.

Ions....I am aware and also agree with the rule in place. Maybe a couple more posts and I'll be there.

Ive got a lifepixel converted 20d for standard ir 720nm that id sell for 600.. 700 with grip. sadly having a 5d classic and a mk2 i really dont have any crop friendly landscape lenses anymore. The thing to remember with diy conversions is you dont recalibrate for ir autofocus adjustment. thats where a professional conversion wins. With my current gear lineup Id rather grab a 5d classic to ship for conversion and sell my 20d. pm me for shots from my 20d.

I'm looking for something that can show heat escape from houses. Have you ever tried to see if that shows on your 20d ir photos.

You need a thermo imaging camera as the silicon sensors are not capable of seeing heat because the wavelength is much too long. It might be possible to just see a very hot oven.

Interesting statement ... and the difference between Infrared wavelength and heat wavelength is...?

They are both within the infrared spectrum but wavelength at room temperature it is about 10 times longer wavelength then what we call near IR... To put it into perspective the whole visible spectrum is covered by a factor of 2 in wave length... I suggest if you find this topic interesting you might want to do some learning and web researching.

I don't need your suggestion to do learning and web searching. If you can't reply without your snot I suggest you don't reply at all.

There's nothing wrong with asking questions that incite discussion on forums.

Touchy aren't you

I gave you a full and correct answer both times even though your subsequent reply and question to my reply was put in a way that could be construed in a negative way.

Yes Wikipedia is available to all and could have explained the IR place in the em spectrum. Since when did pointing out there is more to learn turn out to be snot?

Maybe you need something more simple like: the infrared band part of the em spectrum is very very wide, the part of the infrared band that your IR converted DSLR can see is very very narrow.

Now that is truly snotty

Generally things like heater coils or an element on the stove and a soldering iron will show up flourescing with an ir camera. but heat isnt something the modified sensor sees, as a rule.

I have a spare 30D...might just send it out to lifepixel and get it done. Seems it would be the cheapest way.
