a fairly inexpensive one can be found here:

http://vistek.ca/store/ProPhotoLighting ... -10ft.aspx

Others have noted that MPEX is a good place to look for lighting gear (seeing as how they have the official blessing of Mr. Strobist), but add shipping and the price starts to lose its competitive edge.

I bought the studio98 stand. It does the job but I must say it is light as in be careful with it outside! Arrived two days after ordering.

Not necessarily made of plastic but are you referring to this?

+1 for deal extreme. I get flashlights regulary from them and I've never waited more then 1 week. And for the price? Shipping is usually included in my orders too.

As Mike above mentioned,

http://vistek.ca/store/ProPhotoLighting ... -10ft.aspx

this lightstand is a great! I have a couple and it is way better than the Cameron mini stands that they sell at Henrys.

They are usually called "multi clamps" or "umbrella adapter" or some variation thereof. I have a pair of them to go with my pair of light stands (same one quoted earlier in this thread). I don't trust the screw mount on the Nikon flash stands, so I use the Paramount hotshoe cords that I've had since my PocketWizard days. That allows me to mount a speedlight directly on the clamp, and attach an umbrella to it. Or I can stick a 24" EzyBox on the clamp instead. Or I can just mount an Alien Bee directly on the top stud of the light stand. It's very versatile, and takes up very little room.

Hi Guys

I"m looking at putting a little strobist kit together myself.

I was wondering if you guys have an opinion on how the two following light stands compare:

http://vistek.ca/store/ProPhotoLighting ... -10ft.aspx

http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,11667.html

My plan is to order items like the umbrellas and umbrella swivel from mpex and save on the shipping costs of the stands.

Thanks

I have the one from midwest and can tell you that it's pretty sturdy. I don't have any experience with the one from Vistek.

i have 4 from Vistek and they work fine, except dnot cheap out on the adapters as a heavy softbox can drag it down at an angle.

I order from Deal Extreme too but it sometimes takes 2 or more weeks. I guess i have bad luck.
