Looking into getting some proper glass, I'm not sure my best options obviously Iv heard lots about the 24-70mm nikkor big price tage but how is it on a 300s? any examples? would I be better going a different route or go with that if I plan on eventually uprgrading to fx some day?

Thanks!

-Tyler

i was in the same predicament. my decision was based purely on what i saw myself doing in the future (ie. saying DX or going FX...). since i don't see myself being able to fund FX anytime soon (i mean, collect a 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 at once, plus a FX camera) i ended up purchasing a 17-55 instead (the 24-70 dx-equivalent?). it has been working excellent for me so far.

again, it just depends on what you see yourself using in the future. period. cause it's not just a 24-70, it will quickly turn into a 14-24 and 70-200 as well haha.

let's let me let the FX people chime in...

I use the 24-70 on a dx body. There is nothing wrong with that combo. It basically make it a 36-105 on a dx which is perfect for what I shoot most. If you need this range and have the $$$, I say get it over the 17-55. If your on a budget then get the Tamron 17-50 instead. It's just as good as the Nikon 17-55 at half the price. If you want samples head over to flickr and look at the Nikon 24-70 group.

Edit: this lenses is on sale at Downtown Camera for $1695 which is the lowest I've seen it to date.

what type of stuff are you shooting? 24 isn't very wide if you are looking to do some wide-angle work. and if you plan to use it all day prepare to feel sore the next day. (not that the 17-55 is any lighter)

24-70 is a nice range for medium telephoto on a DX camera. I myself am thinking about upgrading to a 24-70 in 2010. I think its time to either ditch the 28-70 or get it fixed. I am getting tired of the stiff zoom ring on my copy.

Photojournalism stuff and red carpet events which don't really need a wide lens for. When I do need it, I use a Tokina 11-16 use to do indoor real estate stuff.

Again, don't know what the OP has in mind for this lense. But there is really nothing wrong using it on a DX body. I ended up getting this as I needed the extra reach that the Tamron 17-50 didn't have.

I've had the 24-70 and the 70-200VR hanging from my body all day, you'll get use to it.

I have no complaints with this baby on Dx either and it's still my dream lens. Just stating some of the blips I have encountered with it :p.

My friend uses it on his D300 and it's a sharp lens. I think the big question is if the focal length of this lens on a DX body is what you like working with.
