I was photographing an event last night and the camera just stopped working. When I pushed the shutter, it wouldn't focus or take a shot. None of the dials or anything would work either (to change ISO, aperture, or shutter speed.

I had a 17-55 attached to my 40d shooting in AF with a 430EX II flash. Upon further examination, I realized that it was in fact working in MF (manual focus). The same scenario played out with my 50mm 1.8 attached as well.

Does anyone know what this problem can be? The connectors on the mount look good. Should I just take it in to have it looked at? Is there a potential easy fix for this?

I have tested it in all modes, without flash, different settings, etc. Still nothing.

I've read about similar incidents to yours. Have you done a hard reset by removing both batteries, waiting approx 5min or so and then replace the batteries. If that doesn't work, you may need to take it into Canon for repairs. Are you running the most current firmware?

Hey C, do all I need to do is remove the batteries then put them back 5 mins later or do I need to reset anything on the camera?

Just pop the main battery and the the small 3v lithium one as well. Just let it sit for about 5-10min without any juice and then put back in the batteries. There's no button or button combos to press. I hope this works for you.

You can check the battery electrical contacts while you're waiting around. Try giving them a light brushing with the eraser tip from a pencil.

Something similar happened to my 40D once this summer. I lost response from most of the buttons but not all. Removing the battery and putting it back a few seconds later solved the problem

If it does it again reload the firmware.
