So I was 3 days into a 14 day trip to west africa and I managed to drop my 1d out of an open backpack and onto a cement floor. Luckily, the camera landed lens first, well, rim of uv filter first, on the floor. The filter exploded. Glass flew everywhere, which was quite a sight to see. In the end, the rim of the filter was dented big time, to the point where I couldn't unscrew it off the lens. BUT, the lens and the camera suffered no damage whatsoever. I was even able to screw a new filter onto the lens (after I used wire cutters to cut off what was left of the old uv filter).
Needless to say, at this point, I love uv filters.
Anyone else have a horror story that's not so horrible thanks to having a filter on their lens?

I hate UV filters.

Dropped a lens with one and the filter shattered scratching the front lens element. Dropped a few lenses with rubber hoods and metal hoods since, no damage to the front element.

I'll take a lens hood over a UV filter for lens protection any day in a non-sand, non-salt, non-high altitude environment, those being the only time where I use a UV filter.

Filters rock. They are the last line in lens protection.
