Read this on another forum, posting here to make folks aware of some hot equipment out there if it ends up on craigslist, etc.

If you have any info please contact Owen: owen@sbcmedia.com

Somebody went ahead and stole all of my gear on October 6th, 2009 around 8:00 PM in Toronto, ON in front of 65 Clinton Ave where we were parked. It was a smash and grab as I had two brand new skateboards in the back seat (DGK Wade DesArmo & Organika Karl Watson) which led the door to them seeing my camera bag which was stashed in the back of the hatch of the vehicle. Here's what is now missing:

Hasselblad:
500 C/M Body
30mm 3.5 Fisheye lens (slight bend in the hood from boards & scuff on the bottom of the hood from sliding on the pavement)
120mm 4.0 lens
Prism Finder
Waistlevel Finder
120 Film Back

Nikon Cameras and Lenses:

D2Xs Body
D2H Body (SNE162072)
80-200mm 2.8 lens (etched LA Times on lens barrel)
50mm 1.8 lens (516605)
10.5 Fisheye lens (327130)
Tamron 28-200 lens

Flash/Flash Accessories:

Nikon SB-800 flash (x3) (SNE 2503204)
Quantum Q-Flash Model T
Quanutm Q-Flash Model T2
PocketWizard Plus II Transceivers Radio Slaves (x7) (6129955, 6129934)
10 PocketWizard Slave Cables
Quantum Turbo Z Battery (x2)
Lumidyne Battery
Minolta Light Meter III

Gitzo Mini Tripod
SanDisk CF Cards (x5)
Fuji Provia (x10)
Ilford Delta BW Film (x5)
Garmin NUVI GPS & Cables
Tamrac Wheelie Travel Bag (Black)

I can't say i feel terribly bad for this guy.

Who leaves that amount of gear worth such a large chunk of $$$, in your car. At least insurance should pick up some of the tab.

we should all keep an eye out on CL, Kijiji and ebay for similar items being sold in Toronto.

I was scouring around just now but didn't find anything.

Thieves are smarter nowadays, they'll wait for a month at least or more (cooling down period) then start posting things up for sale.

I suppose that's why things with a box 'retain' their value more. After all, you don't go shooting with the retail box usually.

That's terrible, hope he can track down some of his stuff. Our family civic got broken into for its airbags at a GO station...thieves will try to steal anything and everything that has a market

I was just thinking the same thing. I wonder though: when it comes to insurance is camera gear like bikes where they only cover up to a certain amount and then you have to buy additional insurance for full coverage? [That's probably the topic of some other thread though...]

Wow, that looks more like a wish list then it does a stolen equipment list.
My heart goes out to the guy.

Ironically, most insurance policies of this type (professional photographic equipment while on-site or in-transit) specifically does NOT cover theft from an automobile. Doesn't matter if the gear is sitting on the dash, or locked in your trunk... you are going to have an uphill battle making your claim stick. In fact, my insurance broker said it is better for me to bring all my gear with me inside (e.g., while shooting a wedding reception) and having it stolen there, than it is to lock it in the trunk and then having it stolen from the car.

Seeing this kind of thing breaks my heart. That's like someone taking your livelihood away (especially /w that kind of equipment).

Taob is right, and I hope that guy has dedicated insurance for his gear. My car got broken into 2 years ago ~ sun glasses, ipod and phone were taken... and recouping that money was like pulling teeth from the insurance company.

Exactly why you don't leave it in your car. My gear is worth a fraction of this guys and i won't even pump gas with out bringing it inside with me to pay.

the 35mm Hasselblad lens will be very very difficult to unload, without raising suspicion.. ultra rare and extremely expensive lens.

I hope the OP finds their gear... I won't wish this on anyone, no matter how stupid or lacking in judgment.

I talked with my insurance company about this some time ago and they said the equipment is valued at market value if it's not listed separately on the policy.

My understanding is if you list it on your policy you'll have to pay a little more but then you insured at purchase value.

This of course apply to non commercial equipment.

It depends on your policy, and whether you have your equipment listed as a part of a rider on your homeowner's insurance, or if you have a separate policy for camera gear (unlikely unless you are professional photographer). Check your policy carefully, so you know what you can and cannot claim under different circumstances. The car theft situation is one example. If you travel a lot with your gear, you should ask about out-of-country coverage as well as "inland marine" coverage, i.e.: coverage while in transit, like if an airline baggage handler steals your stuff!

Sad story. But how many of you take an image of your whole gear? What camera takes the picture? Nice, neatly packed bag on the photo. For what purpose is the photo taken? If he wanted to protect himself in case of a theft, he would've called his insurance company to put this on his policy... And if one worries about theft, he does not leave this stuff in the car.

Fishy...

This isn't fishy at all. Besides a lot of us take a picture of the gear we have in our camera bags, cases, etc.

Oh and to add, the shots of the products also stolen with the gear.

Fishy because he took a photo of his gear? Do a search on flickr for "camera bag" and you shall see what camera geeks do.

I 'only' have one DSLR, but I own many cameras. Heck, I can can a picture of all my gear using my cell phone. Any old P&S would do just fine.

sorry to hear about your loss. From reading the thread, I guess I should keep better records of my gear.
I hope you find your gear soon.
good luck.

No, fishy because he left this much stuff in a car.

Taking a shot of one's gear might just as well be for show off. I fully understand that. But you'd also do something like that to prove to the insurance company that you had the gear. In that case, it would only make sense to include it in your policy. After all, there's some serious value in that bag.

If you have any large value of gear it's worth it to list it specifically on your insurance at replacement value....not market value.

People thinks I am crazy for hauling my big bag into restaurant or taking it with me everywhere. I don't think I am crazy or stupid for keeping couple thousand dollar of gear where I can see them at all times.

Sorry for to OP to have this happen. They say don't even leave a pair of shoes in your car where people can see them. A friend of mine use to drive an old accord beater. He had a nike shoe box in the car where he keeps nick nacks. Someone broke into his car just because of that.
