well from my biast experience, id say the canon. Its a beast of a lens, & its sharp well built & totally awesome.

I have had the Canon f4 for lets see, 5 years?... ya 5 (had to count) and iv dropped it & smacked it against walls & things (not proud of that but life happens) & it hasn't missed a single shot.

I've used a Sigma 70-200EX in the past, great lens. Between that and a Canon F4L, I'd personally go with the Sigma because of the F2.8 and it's a great lens for the price.

Compare apples to apples, look at the Sigma when it is at F4.0 and it's pretty the same. At F8, the Canon is slightly sharper.

So how will you be using the images? Printing, web? If you're not going to be printing huge blowups, you'll be fine with either lens IMO.

You haven't considered the other factors, besides sharpness which I would consider to be basically equal for these two lenses.

Weight, portability would be important if you intend to travel with this. The Sigma is significantly heavier.

Low-light shooting - f2.8 is f2.8, and many times that one extra stop makes a big difference.

Also f2.8 will give you better subject isolation than f4.

If none of those other factors are important, then go for the f4.

Canon 70-200 F4, otherwise the Canon 70-200 F4IS if you can afford it. Why even consider passing up on one of Canon's line of superb L zooms. :)

With the sigma you sometimes have to bring it into Gentec to adjust the focus. If you can live with that 2.8 is tempting. If push came to shove and I was to choose I'd probably go with Sigma.

My only beef with Sigma lenses is that they tend to AF hunt in low light/low contrast situations. I have the Sigma 150mm macro and 50mm f1.4. Hunting is more noticeable on the 150mm, esp if I don't use the central AF point. I'd recommend taking your camera body with you and test it for yourself.

Hard to pass up Canon L glass and that f4 is very sharp stopped down one to two stops. :P

Having owned a very sharp 70-200 F4, I'd still take the f2.8 sigma. Fast glass is fast glass and the difference between the two is sharpness is not great enough to pass up on the 1 stop difference.

I'd go for the Canon

I had a back focusing Sigma 70-200, that Gentec ran a full 'fix' on the focus issues - it was out of my hands for 5 weeks - it still back focused when I got it back

Ended up having to shoot at f4 or f5 to make up for it, so I sold the lens

I would rather shoot with my 70-300 f4.5-5.6, then have to always worry about focusing issues

Be happy that Canon has an f4 option - my only other option at this point is the 70-200 f2.8 for $2100.00 ...........

My Sigma worked fine with the 20D but front focused with the 1DMrkIIN. Dropped it off at Gentic, and they replaced the chip on it and got it back within 24 hours with the focus issue resolved.
