HEllo,
Im still on the seach of the perfect Camera for me.
I was wondering if any1 has the Nikon D100.
I found one for about 400$ cash..
Im worried because it 8 years old.

I also see a canon 20D for 400$.

Any thoughts about older cameras? Or should I just step out and spend the extra money on a new Canon XS.

Any thoughts?

I had a D100 years ago... nice camera. But compared to modern advancements in DSLR technology.... The D100 is old, and $400 is way too much to pay for one in my opinion. You can buy a D70 for less.

I wouldn't consider the 8 year old D100.. The 20D sounds like a good deal but it depends on the condition and actuations.

I usually suggest the Canon XS as a starter camera.

ya, Thats what i was worried about .. Technology advancements - 8 years is a long time...

any thought on the canon 20D? it will be about the same price as the Canon XS --
again the situation is Newer Tech vs Older tech.

I would suggest newer tech as the old stuff, if it goes bad on you, its almost done and will cost $$$ to fix

20D is a decent camera, but for XSi or XS, I'd go the newer sensor and newer functions

the other problem with the D100 is that you can't actually get a shutter count without sending it to Nikon.. so you have no idea if its about to expire for good!

Better off saving your money, and getting a newer body like a D60 or D90, or D70s, or D300 if you can swing it.

The D300 should be coming down in price as the new D300s will be hitting the stores soon.

Is $400 your budget?

If your going to buy an older 20D, which is a fine camera I would hope it is a good deal.

Today there are many better choices out there, as an example the Canon G10 is in my opinion a better camera for $500 bucks and it shoots wide at 28mm at 2.8 and also RAW and has a 3 inch LCD!

The 20D you would have to use like an 18mm lens to get that wide with the crop sensor factored in and if it is a kit lens it will not be a 2.8 nor will the images be near as sharp as the 28mm on the G10. I think if you compare looking at the tiny LCD on the 20D to a 3 inch LCD on the newer cameras you would also see how nice it is to actually see what your shooting.

Also, why are so many worried about shutter count? Shutter count is not a big deal, many are rated at around 100,000 clicks... many of these cameras are used on weekends to shoot the kids, flowers or the odd protest... do the math and you will see actually how many images you have to shoot to get to even close to that number!

Good luck whatever you decide!

that makes me think you're saying that G10 has a full frame sensor, which I highly doubt

Well, the G10 is an extremely capable camera and one of the best "pro" P&S.
I have the G9 and its amazing on amount of details that the photos can hold.

I am pretty sure it can compete with a dSLR like the 20D because of the older technology and processing.

The 20D may be old technology, and perhaps the G10 has a slight lead on details on base ISO, but in other areas like, speed of capture, high ISO performance, versatility of changeable lenses, etc. it can not come close.

The only advantage of the G10 is portability, video, and a slightly higher resolution.

I think the Nikon D40 is a great beginner camera. I was looking at it very closely until a D60 deal came up.

I think the point of getting SLR camera is interchangeability of lenses, isn't it?

In terms of signal to noise, the G10 at base ISO is equivalent to the 20D at ISO 400.

The g10 isnt a option, Even tho it sounds like a GREAT camera.
I like the ability to change lenes, to get exactly what i want to capture.

well

the Canon 20D vs Canon XS

20D
Magnesium alloy
8MP
Digi II (I dont know the diff)
9point AF
5FPS
screen is small

XS
Crappy feeling plastic boy.
10MP
Digi II (I dont know the diff)
7point AF
3FPS
Screen is bigger
-----------------

Personaly I love the feel of the 40D/mag body.
The XS just feels crapy with the plastic.

I dont understand the digiIII and digiII image processor.
Is this where the XS wins.. Maybe much better image quality?
Or is it bearly noticable.

The MP dosent bother me much,

get 20D or increase your budget and opt for a longer term 40D

If it is any consolation. I shot with a 10D for many years. It is a sharp camera. It does not have the fancy toys. My biggest issues with the camera are is it's speed. Time to process a Raw image and display it is slow and the ISO performance cannot compare with more modern cameras.

That said. In all other aspects an awesome camera. The cost difference between a 30D and 20D is pretty small these days. I would choose the 30D for budget reasons. There is a complete kit one up for grabs in the for sale forum.... I'd trust Taob he is a pro.

I would not worry too much about actuations either. My 10D is up in the 30 billion range now.....
