See, this is what I mean when people ask me "why did you switch to Nikon?" and I say "because Nikon gives you a lot more camera for a lot less money". So here we are with the new D300s:

  • 51-point Multi-CAM 3500 AF module
  • 7 fps continuous burst rate (8 fps with grip)
  • dual CF and SD slots
  • "silent" shooting (delayed mirror return)
  • external microphone input
  • LiveView on a 3" 920,000-dot display
  • built-in wireless flash Commander
  • sensor cleaning system
  • 720p video @ 24 fps
  • US$1800

I'm very tempted now to sell my one remaining Canon 30D + 28-135mm that my assistant uses, and picking up a D300s + 18-200mm VR-II combo...

My bro-in-law is gonna be pissed! He bought the 70-200f2.8 VR a couple months ago (needed it for an upcoming wedding gig). I guess he didn't expect the new release to come out so soon! He's gonna kick himself!

I think I'm going to wait for Photokina to see what the new toys will be before upgrading my 70-200f2.8 non-IS for an IS version.

Well, apart from the VR -> VR-II change, I'm waiting to see what else is significantly different. It's not like the existing 70-200/2.8 VR was a piece of crap or anything.

Hopefully the Canon 60D won't be as disappointing as the 50D or else I'll have a D300s by the end of the year...

I like Nikon's approach even from a non-Nikon user . With 7 ed element and sell-your-kidney price tag, it is going to be a killer or a big dud if it does not measure up, image-wise.

Hopefully they've improved on the very bad corner and edge performance.

only relevant IF you shoot FX, on DX there were no issues at all.

I'm interested to see if it is better in DX as well, or is it "optimised" for Full Frame.

Nano coating actually works, I've noticed better wide-open sharpness on my nano-coated lens.

Also the D300s has dual CF and SD slots.

True. The current model is a workhorse and in "real life" shooting on FX body, you can't notice the vignetting when shot wide open. If you shoot a subject on white seamless wide open, there is a very very slight vignetting in the corners.

See, this is what I mean when people ask me "why did you switch to Nikon?" and I say "because Nikon gives you a lot more camera for a lot less money". So here we are with the new D300s:

  • "silent" shooting (delayed mirror return)
  • external microphone input
  • LiveView on a 3" 920,000-dot display
  • built-in wireless flash Commander
  • sensor cleaning system
  • 720p video @ 24 fps
  • US$1800

the d300 already has much of this. 51 piont af, live view, flash commander, sensor cleaning.

the 300 doesn't have live view does it?

according to dpreview, the differences between the 300 and 300s are the following:

-720p HD video, including autofocus while recording
-SD card slot in addition to existing CF slot
-Faster continuous shooting (7fps, vs. 6fps)
-Socket for external microphone
-Live View and Info buttons
-Discrete 'OK' button in multi controller
-Interactive settings display screen
-Auto and Extra High Active D-Lighting options
-Quiet drive mode
-Virtual horizon

It does have live view. What they mean is that the D300s has dedicated button for live view.

I paid about $1700 for the 70-200. Based on the US price of $2400 of the new one, it will probably cost around $3000 after taxes. I think I will wait a while on this one.

Wow.... those spec's are impressive. I just might sell my D90 and pickup a D300s sometime by Christmas.

Yes, which reinforces my point: Nikon seems to have much less aversion to trickling down "high-end" features to the lower tiers of their product line. Imagine if Canon gave the 50D the same 45-point AF module as the 1-series, dual card slots, plus all the nice little 1-series software features (custom functions, custom file naming, expanded EV compensation range, etc.). Based on Canon's history, they won't do that for the 60D either, but I would be pleasantly surprised if they did.

It's not a noticeable problem for me on the D700's, especially since I tend to add more corner vignetting in post anyway. ;) The lens is sharp in the 90% of the frame my subjects tend to occupy, and besides the corners/edges are usually out of the focus plane. If I really needed corner-to-corner flat-field sharpness, I'll set my 105mm VR macro to f/8 and be done with it.

The D300s tempts me as a second-shooter/backup camera, but I doubt I'll get the new 70-200.

Might pick up a 70-200VR II for landscapes & the occasional event. But fer goddsakes .. did they HAVE to make it even longer and heavier than even Canon's version .. ?!! Anyways it's about time that they updated the current lens. What a bummer about the weight and length though ..

Henry's quoted CAD $2500 for the 70-200VR II. However, Vistek is milking it for CAD $2800:

LOL,

Make's 3 of us then. I passed on the D300 when I got to play with one and the 300s although better isn't really pulling me. I might wait for the D700 replacement and hope to pick up a lightly used D700 second hand, can't afford to drop $3k more on a hobby :(

Looks like Henry's increased the price to CAD $2800 for the 70-200VR II. Wow. Does anyone know of a place selling for cheaper? (pre order).

I have no interest in upgrading the 70-200 anytime soon, as I am quite happy with the old one. I don't really use it as much as I used to anyhow, but I am not going to sell mine, as its nice to have when I do need it!

But I am really really thinking about the D300s with those spec's, it would be a perfect companion to my D700, as I am currently using the D90, which is ok, but a D300s with similar body, and grip would be attractive for my kit. I would give the D90 to my wife if I didn't sell it, as she is interested in "going digital"....
