I should've hoarded more 8 gig CF when it was $25.

How's this?

Anyone tried Centon Memory? I've never heard them before but it looks nice.

What are your pictures worth risking on an unknown brand.

Then again I own a $190 Lexar 1gig and a $350 Sandisk 4gig ExtremeIII.

The Lexar I bought with the camera 4 years ago (which was a waste of money since my camera doesn't take advantage of Lexar's WA Write Acceleration technology), and the Sandisk was 3 years ago.

You get what you pay for. Just don't trust your life with technology. Be smart and back up your data if it's really important.

That doesn't beat my $80 256mb CF 6 years ago.

My 2 gig CF was $120. 4 Gig was $80.

I know the whole "what's my photos worth and data and all that", i'm just wondering if anyone knows any great deals like the past Kingston 133x CF card, 8 gig for $25. Now its $43.

Kingston is a name brand they've been around for years. I use only Transcend and i've never had a card failure. I have however had 2 lexar and 1 sandisk failures. 300X transcend 4 GB is 40.99 at Canada Computers.

Just my personal opinion and experience. You're more likely lose your memory card, or have it stolen (along with the bag/camera) than you are to experience a card failure.

I still lean towards the Sandisk Extreme III's for CF cards, due to performance, more than security. I have Lexar, Transcend, RocketFish and Sandisk at this point in time.

For my SD/microSD/SDHC cards, I have Sandisk, PNY, Patriot and Kingston.

In total, that's about 30 memory cards from 1gig to 16gig's, in MP3 players, PDA's, GPS, cameras, camcorders etc. And I tend to go thru harsh conditions too. No card failures yet.

Personally I try to avoid Kingston...I had Kingston ram in my desktop PC and I had one module fail after another, and my PC wasn't overclocked...I recently replaced all my Kingston ram and haven't had a problem since.

I've had one CF card fail, but that was about 10 years ago...can't remember what brand it was.

I've got you all beat -- my first 512 mb CF card was worth $250 when I got it -- price per byte - that's damn expensive!!!

Now if I could only remember what I paid for my 2mb card way back when I first got into digital (2mb is NOT a typo).

:) - I hear ya, my Amiga 1000 had a 50 megabyte hard-drive, and that was a pretty big drive in the day.

Do a search on ebay for smartmedia.

Some of those cards are $1/MB.

Brands that I trust are Lexar..although they did have a problem with their 1GB cards in the begining, kingston 266x, Sandisk Ultra II, Extreme III and IV.

I believe the Kingston and Sandisk has lifetime warranty..although a moot point IF you lose your pics.

On a side note I paid $600.00 for the IBM 340mb Microdrive for my first digital..Canon G2

When I got my Canon G1 back in 2001, my 64BM Kodak flash card cost me around $150.

My first card was a memory stick. 128 mb for just over $100.

Hey guys - if I could chime in with some advise given to me when I started...

... never buy higher then a 4G card.

I would rather have two 4G cards then 1 8G just in case a card goes south I won't lose all the pics. Has happened on a shoot where one of my 2G cards went south. Losing 40 pics was not a big deal since I had 5 of those cards on the go - still tons of images.

Just my $0.02

That piece of advise is all well and good sounding, but doesn't take into consideration the type of camera that you have. This was the rule about 2-3 years ago when there was no such thing as 16 or 32gb memory cards.

Technology has come a long way and the smaller cards are using less common flash chips to store the data. Also the camera MP requirements have changed, and so the storage needed will reflect that. A Canon 40d would write a 10-12mb raw file per photo as max res. The newer 50d requires double that storage. And those two cameras are pretty new releases. The 30d took raw files from 6-8mb per photo.

For my 8gb Kingston 133x card, I get 358 photo's. I don't want to loose any of those due to card failure, but as it's said, you are more likely to physically loose a card than have it fail on you. If you are shooting a wedding or event and can easily get up to the 1000-1500 photo taken, then juggling more than a hand full of 4gb CF cards you are more likely to loose one than shooting on a larger 8gb.

Keep it all in perspective.

Matt.
