I'm still shooting with a 20D, I'm a hobbyist and proud father, who mostly takes pictures of my fast moving kids. The autofocus of the 20D sucks and the number of keepers is generally pretty low.

I've been using a friends' "retired" 5D for a few months and even though the autofocus is the same vintage, I've noticed an increase in the number of keepers. I'm guessing that even at around the same age, the 5D was rated for better autofocus.

I love the full frame experience, and I'm due for an upgrade, but I'm not sure I want to get a mark 2 and have 6 year old autofocus for another 5 years, at the same time, there's no way I can justify $3500 for the mark 3 when I don't make money from my pictures.

any thoughts or advice?

1D mark2 or mark2N. Those things could be had for under 1000 bucks nowadays I think; considering I sold a mk 2 for 1100 bucks 3 years ago. Or even go for a mark 3 with no focus issues.

I will say however the AF speed of the 1 series are absolutely addictive.

they want us to order from the USA?

It's not necessarily the camera stores fault. Very often it's the distributors.

From my recollection - Canon Canada is the distributor.

They are really shooting themselves in the foot - especially when Canon warranties are North American wide....just don't try it with Nikon - their warranties are country specific.

If I was a retailer I would seriously ask Canon why I should source from Canon Canada vs. sourcing from a US distributor - because I know my customers are.

Yup, motorcycle parts and accessories industry is the same. Parts Canada is eroding the Canadian marketplace with their prices while everyone looks down south to shop.

I'm probably looking at 3 choices:

1. buy 5D classic for $1,000
2. buy 5D Mk ii for $2,000
3. wait until 5D Mk iii is $2,000-2,500 in 3 years

and number 2 is maybe the most likely

Not to burst your bubble.. But when the 5D2 was released it cost around the $2700 for the body. In the past 4 years it has dropped below the $2000 mark once.

Why would you believe that a $3700 camera will loose $1200 value (32%) in 3 years when it's predecessor has only once managed to drop 26% once. Right now it's selling at 15% below it's initial release price. For the price range you are looking at, I can only assume you mean buying a used one.

Any newer camera is going to give you features and performance beyond the 20d that you currently have.

The stores have no choice but to charge those prices. It's sort of a price fix that is being forced by Canon that they are not allowed to charge below MSRP. I talked with a camera store owner who listed their price at $50 below the MSRP and was told off by Canon. His only choice to make his pre-order price different was to offer a free memory card to his customers.

It doesn't work out to $300 savings when you add it all up. You need to put in larger shipping costs along with brokerage charges (even though there is no duty).

It is interesting to note that the new 5D3 has better AF than the old 1D4

And that is on a Canadian credit card? In other words, you aren't going to have to pay a conversion rate on top of that are you?

$241 is in C$ already. Total in C$ is 4051.

The gap appears to be closing between Canada and the States for the camera. I just looked up the B+H price and it is as follows:

SubTotal: $3,499.00
Customs Clearance : $471.08
Shipping: $25.05
Order Total: $3,995.13
If you factor in 2.9% which is a typical credit card conversion rate you get a grand total of $4110.99
I assumed the dollar is at par but in fact the CDN$ is btter than par by about .65% right now, hence a better deal for Canadians to buy south of the border.

Aden has the 5D3 body for $3699 * 1.13 = $4179.87
The difference between them is $68.88

Same goes for the 5D3/24-105 kit
Aden = $5140.37
B+H = 5052.22
Difference = $88.15

I am sure your favourite CDN retailer would match the Aden price. Happy shopping :-)

speaking with several of the camera stores, they won't do any matching until the unit is actually shipping. So it's still up in the air the actual cost that anyone is charging until the 22nd when it's expected that they will start to go out. still have to wait another 7 more days.

Tempting. Dual card slots, 41 cross type points, headphone jack for audio monitoring, DOF button finally on the more accessible side of the body (wasn't really a deal breaker). 6fps. Not sure if that's enough for me to upgrade right away... maybe in a year or so. I'll let the guys who like to get the latest/greatest to guinea pig it and report any bugs first. :p

haha, that is so true right there.

5D III real world samples and preview update at DPReview once they get the page updated. As I post this they say it's there but it's not.

Amusing, and quite technical, discussion of the video capabilities of the 5D MKIII on the Drew Network. Some naughty words.

Surprise, surprise! I recall when the 5DMKII started shipping, you couldn't find a body in-stock for the first few months! It was all pre-orders and waiting list. Good stuff!

http://gizmodo.com/5897098/d800-vs-5d-mark-iii-which-shoots-better-video Interesting comparison. Personally I prefer the D800 results, although I'll probably never use the video feature lol.
