Hats off to the pickpockets of Barcelona - masters at their craft - but for my money (literally and figuratively) the best pickpockets are the trannies that hang out along Copacabana in Rio in the evening.

Not getting your money's worth doesn't cout as pickpocketing Phil. Zing!

I am now an official member of the "I love Paris" group! I just ran across the really low level scams...ie, dropped ring and the countless "mute".

My only pickpocket personal story also occurred along the Copacabana promenade, back in the days when Brazil was under a "benevolent" when compared to Argentine military dictatorship. In those days trannies were not tolerated. So I am assuming my hustle was by real ladies of the night but no way to tell for sure. :?

Anyway I was approached and bumped by 2 of the ladies. And then 4 minutes later I was approached by a 3rd with my wallet complete with money and credit cards held in her hand. She claimed she found it on the ground and hinted she would appreciate a reward for returning it. I was happy to oblige, a lesson cheaply learned. I've never had another attempted pickpocket since even when I was back in Brazil. Although I do have a few too many stories from later trips to Brazil that I shan't bore you with.

The ones I met definitely look like women. I was forewarned that they were trannies and I would definitely have thought they were women if I hadn't been forewarned. I was stumbling home at some godawful hour in the early morning and was only carrying money - probably $40 worth. Expecting to run the gauntlet I placed my money in to the pocket with a zipper which I closed. They playfully and seductively bumped and brushed in to me feigning drunkenness wanting a light for a cigarette. I was fully aware of what they were trying to do and they STILL managed to extract the money from my zippered pocket.
When I got back to the hotel I could only laugh that I was still pick pocketed even though I was careful. They were THAT good.
