I have a Mac Pro and a Macbook. A quad core desktop and a dual core desktop and I prefer my Windows 7 machines. OSX 10.6.x in most ways is a little less stable and reliable.
Windows 7 in the other hand is an amazing achievement by MS considering the issues with Vista.
Apple dropped the ball on their latest OS. Maybe 10.7 can compete with W7.

In addition I'm not too trusting of the "Mag-Safe" power connector...one of the first rules of computing is to keep it away from magnets. Yes my Dell even has a magnetic lid, but they are in a fixed position and there's no chance the magnets will get near the hard drive, unlike the Mag-Safe connector.

err...You do realize that is realistically a myth? Yes, magnets will damage your hard drive...but hot damn they have to be industrial mega strength magnets to have any chance of doing so. Seriously there is nothing in your computer that will be affected by a normal magnet. Heck, ever pop open a hard drive? Hot damn, those are some damn strong magnets in them.

Okay, okay, I lied. Normal magnets do kill...floppy disks...if you still have them..

Hey, I'm a fanboy of the one true platform.
It never once crashed.
Never needs to be restarted even if you are installing a new OS on top of it.
Even with hardware repair/replacement it didn't need to be turned off (CPU, hard disk, etc. etc.) Just take the bad CPU out and slap in another one while it's still running!
Heck, the only time it gets turned off is...well...when we lose power (sorry, no nuclear power module).
Every other platform I have ever used crashes, needs restarts, has really oddball GUI stupidities.
The only other computer that comes close to its reliability/stability is the Etch A Sketch
...course I am talking about the Tandem (now HP Non-Stop)...meaning it has no GUI, and it's one damn archaic OS...heck your iphone has a more powerful CPU. And well, don't think they ever heard of the word 'user friendliness'.

Mike you say you learned the mac "in depth" and then after only two weeks of using it, you can't even figure out how to trash a file without dragging it?

I KNOW you can right-click on the file(s) and select "Move to Trash", but you are still INVOLVING the trash can!

As I said above with the PC I can just highlight the files and click Shift-Delete to delete the files without having to deal with the recycle bin.

And with every PC I bought for myself I DISABLE the recycle bin so there's no possibility of accidentally putting files in it...when I delete a file I want to DELETE it!

I already spent time searching Mac forums and have yet to find a solution, other than the shredder download I already mentioned above!

So you tell me if you're such an expert...how do you DELETE a file or files on the Mac WITHOUT having to deal with the trashcan, and NOT downloading a program?

I'm having some difficulty with your problem with the trashcan to begin with...

As an aside, you can hit Command-Delete to move any unlocked file to the trash, no contextual menu selection required.

The trashcan is a precaution against accidentally deleting a file. A holding pen of sober second thought, so to speak. You must understand this, yes? Why would anyone ever want to delete a file for good in the way you describe? It just seems like a recipe for disaster.

You seem to be mistaking user-friendliness for some kind of intentional hamstringing of the user experience.

If it's so user friendly, I should be able to disable that "feature"!

On my Windows machines there's enough of a safety net with it asking if I'm sure I want to delete the file or files.

It's just annoying to first "move" the files to the trash, and then immediately empty the trash.

I remember when the Windows recycle bin first was introduced, the first thing I wanted to do was circumvent it, and now I want to do the same thing to the Mac!

If this thread is locked you are going to start a new thread about how to delete a file without it going to the trash can???
