take a look at either 17-40 f/4L or 70-200 f/4L, both are awesome, especially if you consider the price used - $650-750, a 50mm 1.8 is only $100, and will give you something new

I'd recommend the Sigma 30mm

It's all been said above. In your price range upgrading the body would be a waste of money. This may sound rude but if in 2 years of shooting an XT you haven't learned what type of lenses you need for the type of shooting you like to do or what a dust spot is on your sensor I would suggest you not spend any more money on equipment. When you (not this board) figure out how you want to use your camera and what the parameters on your camera and lens mean to you as a photographer then come back to us for advice on purchasing a new improved bottle washers.

If you have to buy something then get the best prime lens you can afford in the range of cost and type that fits with your budget and type of shooting.

The 18-200 may be the lense you're looking for. Don't know what kind of IQ it produces on the Canon side. The Nikon's 18-200VR is an all around lense that produces great images and is awesome for general photography.

As Tanner suggested too.. sounds like the 18-200 or the new 18-135 is the focal range the OP is requesting.

I had an EF 18-200 a while ago, and I'd say it's a better performer than the older 17-85. Images were quite crisp, but suffered severe distortion at short focal lengths. I believe the new 18-135 will perform similarly, maybe a touch better.

The 18-200 is quite an underrated lens. Not my cup of tea anymore, but great as an all-in-one vacation lens. You should be able to get a new one for just under $700. Good luck!

Think this is the best post here.

you know, i'm starting to suspect that this could be a troll post. Almost like starting a thread in a Canon forum asking for advice on what Nikon camera to buy.

Discussions always takes a tangent.

Simply put, OP has a budget. He wants to upgrade his body. There's enough feedback on what he should do so it's up to him now. (And now unsubscribing from this thread.)

I've just upgraded my XSI with 2 L lenses, now I can shoot at ISO1600, I bet you know what I mean

Going from the 18-55/3.5-5.6 to a 35/1.4 or 30/1.4 will give you greater improvement of image quality vs upgrading to only a slightly better body.

That's a 3 stop improvement in low-light and the difference btwn shooting iso 3200 vs iso 400.

I don't see any $500- body out there that can give you a 3 stop improvement.
Don't forget that with 1.4 you only get a very shallow depth of field, which also reduces details in areas out of focus. ISO and aperture work together, not against each other, it's the photographer who has to make a decision :)

not entirely true.... coming from a person who always shoot with 35L on 40D, 7D, 1D3, and 5D2
