What is with the 's' designation on the D300s, D3s and soon to be the D700s. Does it signify full frame or some other consistency of model change?

Just a slight upgrade to a model. Not enough to warrant a full new model number. Kinda like the 1DMkIIn

No worries. It makes me misunderstood when you quote my words in your post. Let's move on.

I quoted your words becasue it was relevant to my question of: Is Nikon doing something (like full frame) consistent with the 's' designation. You mentioned the pending D700's', which is what prompted me to ask the question.

Minor updates tend to get an 's', like the N90s, F401s, D2Hs, D2Xs, D300s, D3s. Somewhat bigger updates get an X, in the digital world this seems to been an otherwise identical camera with a new sensor. IE D1X is a D1H with a new sensor, D2X is a D2H with a new sensor, D40X is a D40 with a new sensor, in the film world it could be either, the F90x is the same camera as the N90s, but the F401X was completely different than the F401(s) and much better.

Nikon's naming conventions are not set in stone and tend to change radically every 10 years or so outside of the single-digit pro models. We're actually seeing such a change right now with the D3000/D5000.

I like the 1.2 crop feature, must be in the new sensor. Gives a bit more reach without using a TC. I guess Nikon will pass this new sensor down to the D700s.

ISO 12800 looks better than my D200 set at 400!

Insanely priced, not sure even if I had the money I'd pay for it.

Seems like we're all owned by our possessions, keeping up with the Jones'
