Good point Ken, IS doesn't help much when it's windy but I'm sure it'll be handy when you're chasing down bees or dragonflies etc.

Kinda reminded me of that joke about the US spending millions designing a pen that can write upside down in space and the Russians used a pencil. :P

I'm not gonna lie, I'm tempted....

A tripod is also a PITA to carry around. Besides, I believe that the Hybrid IS system should work better for Macros and closeups as compared to the conventional IS in the Nikkor 105VR.

Sabesh.

Tripod doesn't always work, I've done a lot of macro shooting, IS would definitely be a great helper at 100mm, price is a different story

What's the scoop? Doesn't seem to come with a lens hood? Will this be the only "L" lens that doesn't come with one?

IS is next to useless at macro distances. While Canon claims they're getting up to 2 stops of IS at 1:1 (which is about 2 stops better than the 105VR does at 1:1), that's still not a whole lot of stabilization and I'd expect to see no more than a stop in general use.

Yep. Canon is now selling the hood separately now, which used to be included with all L lenses. I don't know about others, but I am p!ssed.

That's so cheap of Canon. You spend $1250. for an L lens and they can't throw in a 10

Thx Carlton! Like most Macros I've owned, AF speed is average (maybe slightly faster than the Nikon version I owned). However, once you set it to 0.5m - Infinity, it's VERY snappy (for portraits). Here's a couple of closeups taken with the 7D + 100L (hand held). Click on pics for access to larger versions. Cheers.

Cool shots Sabesh! Hey, is the lens internal focusing or does the front barrel extend/retract? Thanks

I thought it was breath out slowly while supporting camera vertically (hand under lens) and horizontally (hand grip) when taking the shot.

Kind of like a sniper :)

If you got the 70-200 would you sell your 100 since you might find it redundant?

I would only sell my 100 to get the IS version, there's something about the macro close focusing that none of the 70-200 can offer, it's a magic feeling
