truth, if the OP is looking to spend 3-5k on an SLR are you going to suggest a D800 or a D3s? Whats the point of muddying the waters with "oh well if you know what youre doing you can shoot sports with an iphone" BS. You can shoot sports with anything, but that doesnt answer the OP's question.

Well it gets to the point that the gear is not going to make him/ her a better sports photographer. I've seen enough negs on the light table over the years to take this as gospel ;) So yeah, I think the D800 would be fine for sports if he knows how to shoot sports otherwise he's a spraying and praying hack (no offense op).

As well, he also talks about shooting events and such and the D800 will probably better for this although I would skip the E version as moiré is a possibility and I wouldn't want to risk a photo for what is probably wasted resolution and detail, for most photography that is.

Another very good feature is that the D800 is Eye Fi compliant whereas the D3s isn't. This *can* be a very useful tool when one needs to move a photo out fast an can't haul around a laptop.

A bit off topics, but if OP has budget, definitely D4 for sports (burst 160 jpeg):

Can't wait to get my hands on the D800. The amount of detail captured according to the early samples has been amazing.
