so I have decided to buy an used D300s or D7000 for motorsports, airshows and birding, and for everything else I will use the D700. I think I will be quite comfortable with the controls on the D300s, but D7000 is a newer unit. FPS and buffer are my top priorities. I am leaning towards D300s at the moment because it uses the same grip and battery as the D700. any comments?

I like to know which one will track focus better?

Given the subject - motorsports. I would recommend getting the D300s for FPS and buffer. The D7000 is very capable, but the buffer is not huge. Although the D7000 is fine for birding, and airshows. I think for motorsports you would be happier with the more robust buffer of the D300s.

The D300s also has the edge on focus tracking over the D7000 -- although the D7000 definately comes in close second.

I thought that the D300s is "discontinued" (like the D700 is "discontinued", although they are still assembling the last of the parts they still have for it).

... which suggests that you might wait for its successor, but since you also mentioned used, then there isn't a lot of chance you will be able to get one of those used.

I have a d7000, but by the sound of it, I would suggest the d300s for your situation.

I have a D7000 and do some amateur sports photography and I must say it has been sufficient for my needs. If there is any chance you may want video as well, definitely go with D7000.
