Got my Nikon 1 V1 today.... loving it so far. I will report back after this coming weekend on my thoughts. After reading several online reviews, recommendations from several photographers were to stick with shooting RAW, and whenever possible to shoot lower ISO's ... these seem very logical to me, as I follow those theories with my DSLR's.

I did shoot a few video's, and did some water droplets with the slow motion video mode. VERY COOL! I am hoping to shoot some slow motion video clips of street scenes in Toronto, as a project .. so look out for that video to come sometime in the near future.

So far the things that have most impressed me:

Size and weight of the camera are nice, the camera is solid. Images look great in RAW ... and the AF is fricken fast! I'll have more thoughts in the following days.

ok first pics from today on my flickr... I headed over to Tyrone Mill this afternoon to do some shooting. I am mighty impressed with the image quality from this camera. The other 9 images are on my flickr stream.

This camera holds itself well when shooting manual exposure mode and recording in RAW. All of my images were processed with basic exposure and cropping adjustments in CS5. The images a very exceptable, even at 3200 ISO. I suspect most of the people complaining about image quality are shooting in automatic mode with the camera producing jpeg images.

Hi Dave you might be interested in these links :

The photography world was bitchin' about the small sensor before the camera came out. Now it is out the reviews have been very positive. Seems like Nikon R&D hit a home run in regards to creating a brand new segment.

Thanks.. I've actually seen both of those video's - I did some very heavy online research in making my decision. I think people around me thought I was crazy... but this little camera packs a powerful punch for what it is. Shooting RAW is definately the secret to yeilding good usable images, as Jpegs processed in-camera do not produce as good results - especially at higher ISO. But one of my images was shot at 3200 ISO, and the image looks pretty good. If any noise - resembles film grain more than anything. Obviously good exposure is half the battle, which is also why I shoot in manual exposure mode whenever possible.

I will be writing a full review of the camera in time for my other club's February newsletter. So I will do more shooting this coming weekend while winter camping.

David

You are making this sound like a RAW only camera. That's great if you like to process each and every image. But if you are on a vacation trip and have 300 images or more....you are probably not going to shoot RAW to save on memory space and time sitting at the computer later on. I would have liked to hear that JPEG is good too. I think that is why I am going to wait for the J2 next fall. Should have those bugs worked out.

Don't get me wrong..... The jpegs are not bad either, but RAW yeilds the best results always. I don't shoot jpegs as a general rule. RAW always. And really.... its easy to process images to jpeg when needed. That's what batch processing is for.

Lensbaby 2.0 mounted on the Nikon 1 V1 with FT-1 adapter. Not bad - this is with the f/2.8 aperture which is the reason for the limited focal range.

I got the 10-30 kit lens, only because it wasn't available alone, only available in the kit. And I now have the FT-1 adapter, so I can mount any of my f-mount lenses on the camera. But its adventageous to use lenses with AFS and VR, as the camera body is so tiny, and the crop is 2.7x, that camera shake is an issue on slower shutter speeds. A tripod of course helps, but the point is portability.

I am looking forward to the possibility of future releases on more CX format lenses. Especially some fast primes such as an 18mm (equivelant of 50mm), and a lens in the 8 or 9mm range (equivelant of 24mm)

Cool, thanks! I'm not expecting it to be amazing at high ISO, but that photo seems to be a good representation of how it would perform in general.

ok, here is the full res file. note - I edited this in CS5, basically some cropping and added some saturation on the rust.

Scott, I am planning to buy the flash and GPS in the next month. I would love a fast prime lens in the near future. I have the FT-1 adapter, and so far love using it with my 35mm f/1.8 DX attached. Also the 14-24 is rediculous, but works well. Longer lenses need VR! As the small sensor gets quite shakey without VR.

I was playing with the system at Henry's one day and I loved that flash. Such nice design and great functionality to it. Haven't played with the gps though. As for the adaptor it wasn't working at the store so we couldn't test things out but I would love it with the 105 macro

I have the adapter and it works well. The camera is a joy to use, and I love the images I am getting out of this little camera.
