A buddy of mine is going to the Peruvian Amazon Jungle and he has a Canon SX-30 that he is bringing along. Does anyone have any pointers on how to proceed with this? I am going to give him some massive silica dry packs to take along but any other suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance!

Humidity can definately be a problem .. the silica packs are a good idea. Not sure otherwise.

When I went to Mexico last summer, I did have pretty bad condensation problem on front element when exiting from air conditioned areas to high humidity and high temperature areas (outside).
After noticing potential issues of internal condensation, I made sure the camera's temperature gets high enough to match the outside temperature by leaving it in the bag with the lens cap on so that I can prevent hot and humid air touching any of the cooler glass elements. Also, it'd be great if you have weather resistant bag to hide your camera in case of sudden rain shower, which is pretty common in tropical area..

As for consistently high-humidity environment, I heard people make dry boxes to prevent mold issues on internal optics from prolonged exposure to such environment.

Pelican case with silica gel packs. Zip lock bags so that the camera and lenses can acclimatize to the outside temperature, before being exposed to the humid air, in order to avoid condensation. Pretty much the same precautions that you would take, when shooting in the winter.

ziplock bags for sure to reduce condensation when moving from colder to hotter environments, and ice versa.

Definately.... Same rules as shooting in the cold and going indoors after being outside. Just opposite extremes.

Wow - I hope you had a good trip! I posted it about thirty seconds after my buddy asked the question, almost as fast as a tweet!
