Has anyone on here ever built one? I'm trying to figure out how hard/easy it would be to build a DIY motorized one. I know there are lots of resources on the net about this, but interested to hear first hand from a TPMG member

There are alot of guides online to build one. I suggest just to break down and buy a eq3 tripod. You will have less hassles and longer lights. Although in Toronto you can only get about 1-2 minute exposures tops before light polution totally ruins the shots. I stack 20-50 30second exposures with modest results.

Building something to raise a board like that should not be too difficult with an

arduino ($30)
a stepper motor driver ($30 ish)
stepper moter (anywhere from free to $20)
a few nuts and bolts
hinged wood.
batteries (or some form of power).

If you know how to program C (or have a friend who can) it is really easy. I am in the stubling stages of this stuff my self but for macro...

I use a EQ3 tripod. Even in Toronto you can get get images like the one below. I used a 300mm lens for this one and not a telescope
