A buddy of mine bought a T3i this weekend and it has a red dot in the middle of the video when he records in 1080P. That said, he is swapping it out and is considering the 60D.

Now he is looking at walk around zoom lenses in the 17/18 to 50/55 arena.

I own a Canon 17-55 2.8 IS but I don't think he is looking to spend that much. I mention the Tamron 17-50/2.8 and the Sigma 18-50/2.8 but not being a video shooter I thought some others could chime in with some suggestions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

I think a constant aperture might be important for video?

And IS if being hand held. Is having a red dot on the video for the t3i a design flaw or can it be turned off?

If he's shooting mostly video and from a tripod or Glidecam rig, he can buy the cheaper prime lenses like a 20mm f2.8, 24mm f2.8, 28mm f1.8, 35mm f2.9, 50mm f1.4 etc.

i know a lot of people won't agree but i've been using old Canon FD prime lenses to shoot video (28mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.4) with an adapter. that could be a cheaper option for him.

The red dot is a flaw - that is why he is returning it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I asked him about constant aperture and how the rig would handle it if he zoomed and he was uncertain. He seems to want a 'normal' zoom as a practical start to his glass collection.

Some of the ideas sound good, some nice wide, reasonably fast lenses might make a lot of sense.

Do any of you video shooters have suggestions on focal length?

if he wants a zoom then I think the Tamron 17-50 is the best price conscious choice for him as it will offer constant 2.8 aperture

+1

I've chatted with cinematographers who use DSLRs for video and they seem to favor manual focus primes for video shooting - Especially the ones that have a focus ring that turns over 270+ degrees from MFD to infinity.

The Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS is a great video lens. Can be found in the $800 range used.

That was the lens I was telling him to look into based on him saying he wanted a 17/18 to 50ish lens. A wide prime might also be a consideration too.

Thanks for all the insight - he appreciates it!
