hello tpmg. i just recently bought a 1D (MKI/Classic i guess) from a buddy of mine who hasn't used it for at least 2 years. i took some test shots yesterday and noticed banding on the left side of the photos. what's causing that? not sure if it's important but the current shutter count on the camera is 82,345. i think it's rated to 150,000?

It doesn't really matter if the shutter is rated at 150K ... it might give up way before that. If you tried different lenses and the result is the same I would say this is the shutter issue .... the only other thing I can think of would be a sensor.

This is indeed a sensor issue and a shutter issue. The original 1D uses a hybrid shutter which is how it gets the high X-sync and max shutter speeds. The mechanical shutter fires and also there's an electronic shutter function in the sensor. The latter is likely related to the issue. A mechanical shutter failure would result in much more obvious image issues than banding.

Note the shutter cycle rating applies only to the mechanical shutter, a sensor failure is not covered by the rating.
