By a chance, I had a look at the full resolution picture of the crowd in front of Buckingham Palace on Friday.

There is a person (in a blue shirt) at the bottom, about 2/3 to the right with an impressive hand-held setting allowing his camera to shoot over the crowd heads. Does anybody have any insights into the setup?

That's one crazy bungy strap... not sure how that works since it would just expand to the floor if it was dropped.

He probably has a remote trigger connected to the hotshoe of the camera and has the trigger in his other hand. You can do this with RF-602/603 very easily.

And of course, the long Aluminum monopod that's like 10 ft long.

The strap was just to keep the camera steady. He might have been shooting video.

That's just crazy looking. He's able to keep the camera relatively straight to the horizon as well. Creative.

Boom pole and a strap to keep the camera stable and redistribute some of the weight onto his neck since he'll only have one hand to support the rig and the other to fire the remote shutter button. You can see what looks like a remote on the camera's hotshoe. Wonder if he managed to smack anyone on the head with it. :)

I'm more impressed by the guy managing a big white lens in that crowd. I'm guessing it's a 500L.

And that laptop at the top of the media box looks... precarious.

The people standing behind his setup is probably not amused by this :D not to mention the danger for the people underneath his setup.

If my view was obstructed by that monstrocity I would have brought it down myself. People have some nerve .. it's one thing to increase your vertical vantage point but that is too much.

I've used my monopod like that (minus the strap)...I use a wired remote to trigger the camera.

There's a better solution: I use my Elton John vintage 2 foot platform pumps to propell me over the crowd
But don't wear a skirt with this get up.

Nodal Ninja makes a number of excellent poles for shooting over crowds or from a high vantage point (extended 10-20ft). They come with remote releases, mainly used for pano work but can be used for static images or video as well so you don't need a rotator.

See the Series I and Series II poles
