Just to throw another one out there - on a crop body - you can get by using the 50mm.

The 50mm F1.8 is nice and cheap.

Of course, I was assuming you were shooting Nikon but I guess you can always mount Nikon lenses on Canon bodies via adopters.

I still say get one of the various different 85's whether it be the pro f/1.4's or the also very awesome f/1.8 which is nice and affordable

I recommended 50/1.8 to a friend of mine assuming he had a IF body when in fact he had a D5000. after a while he added the 35 afs because his wife wasnt used to manual focusing. just something to consider for anyone who is planning to buy the 50/1.8.

Telephoto lenses compress depth, resulting in flatter features than lenses of shorter focal length. The practical effect of this is a 'slimming' effect, which helps with everyone, but especially females.

Is there any sort of calculation to determine how much more slim the picture will look or its more trial and error.

There were some discussion about using long portrait lens (200mm) and creating a 'flattening' effect. Not flattering. Say nose will appear more flat. So if you have a nose similar to Charles De Gaulle it be fine with longer portrait lens.

I believe the Canon 135 2L or 200 2.8L can create the same isolating effect in distracting scenario/background

Another tpmger Taylor has a huge Nikon 200mm/2 with pretty impressive isolating effect

Not sure if you have made you purchase yet. I have the 85mm f/1.8 (non-D). It's much cheaper than the 1.4D (more than half). Although I have not copared the 1.8 and 1.4, for myself, the extra cost is not worth paying for the extra aperture opening. I am not a pro and not making any money off taking pictures.
