So I took a roll of slides to Downtown Camera. Unfortunately, they've had to change out their mounting machine to plastic mounts instead of the older paper ones. Unfortunately, this new one also lacks the mechanism to label negative numbers on the shot, a feature I consider essential for reasons I can get further into on request.

Given the old machine did include this, and I considered this "standard service", what options do I have aside from having to unmount the slides, or run them through an x-ray or something crazy like that to see the neg numbers under the mounts?

Suggestions? Or am I SOL?

Take a duplicate photo with your NEX, does not have to be the same fl, just enough to help you sort it out later.

Success, the two halfs of the slide mount are mechanically attached to one another, not glued. The process of opening them up and getting the neg number is trivial.

Now, stupid film question I'm having a blond moment on. If I'm looking at the image from the side with the text, and the text appearing the correct orientation, then I am looking at the NON emulsion side, right? Scan this side up, and away from the scanner bed?

Thanks in advance.

hold the film so that you read the numbers the right way around, that is so tthat you do not read them as a mirror image. the side that is away from you is the side that goes down on the scanner. Of course you could have scanned one and all would have become clear. I sorta recall some comment you made made about your laziness and something about a fully automatic coffe machine.  :D

look at the slide at an angle... the emulsion side is "rough", the non-emulsion side is just the plastic, so shiny.
