Ditto maybe it's the other one that is a knock off.

sometimes manufacturers have differences for different markets, could be the case as well. I'd do a thorough research if there is something that makes you think the filter doesn't work the way it should. Otherwise just use the thing and not worry about who made it

I have a Hoya Pro1 Circular PL purchased from Maxsaver in December 2010. The packaging is blue. Here is what I can tell you from my filter case.

The size label (52) looks like the one on the silver case in your pictures (top and bottom)(similar size and font with no decimal or "s").
Japan is embossed on the back upper left corner like your silver case.
The bar code label looks like the one on your silver case (same font and design with a 0 and 1 like your silver case at the ends instead of the 8 on the right hand end).
Under the bar code label it says "Tokina Co., Ltd. Made in Japan" on my case (there is none of the registered trademark boiler plate).
On the filter itself it has the words "Made in Japan"
There is the same gap as with your CIR-PL filter when the cap is on it. Maybe that is something about CIR-PL filters.

For most of the items my blue case is similar to your silver case. One interesting difference. On my packaging the HOYA logo on the front and bottom does not have the extended cross bar on the "H" as it appears on both your cases.

I have a 77mm Hoya UV(0) Super HMC Pro1, Super Multi-Coated and the box is black with gold and orange lettering. The gold sticker that indicates the size looks just like the OP size sticker on the blue box.

Most likely? You have two genuine Hoya filters.

Maybe Hoya is changing packaging styles, and chose to roll out the new style at that HK chain.

If you tell me that one of the two is definitely a fake, then the fake is the "real" looking one. Why? Counterfeits are often indistinguishable from the real thing. :-)

Just thinking outside the box.

I suspect they are both authentic. IIRC Hoya makes a Super HMC, HMC and other 'lines' of filters. Not all are manufactured in Japan (Phillipines, Thailand, Vietnam as well perhaps).

Packaging differences are probably just a simple way to differentiate the different lines (coatings etc).

I use to only use Super HMC filters and the packaging was different from all the other lines of filters they offered. Packaging also changes over time so you may have some NOS.

Use it and if it works to your satisfaction, why worry?

This comparison might be of interest to you:

Notice the reflection of the lightbulb on the computer screen. Stick with SHMC if you must use a filter.
