i know that kiev's are looked down upon by people who can afford hasselblads but i'm intrigued by the potential of the kiev 88. i am however also aware of the uncertainties that come along with these copies.

i phoned the guy and asked him if it works. he said he knows nothing about the camera but that it has never been used. he said i could come over to check all the parts to see if it's working.

the problem is, i'm not a professional and so do i know how to "check to see" if a camera works just by playing around with the parts. heck i've never even held a medium format camera before. so i ask him if i can try a roll of film on it with him present, give the camera back to him, go home and get the film developed and report back once i get the pictures back and he says "i cannot do this, because i do not have the time." and he proceeded to repeat these same lines literally over 15 times: "i'll let you come over, look at all the parts etc etc...u can bring a friend who knows more about cameras...but i cannot allow u to put roll of film because this is childish....you cannot do this in store...so why u to do this with my camera?"

i tried to get across the point that he is not a store because he cannot guarantee that it works but either he was playing dumb or he really is.

anyways, i thought i share this story and maybe get some opinions about this offer.

Do some research.. print out the manual and other articles on how to use it, read it and memorize, go to the guy's house, insert film, make sure it winds, shoot 12 frames, take out the film. If the above went smoothly, then the camera pretty much works a-okay.

Kievs are great. You can get good results with basically any camera. My $80 Yashica gets the same good photos as my $300 Rolleiflex. Same old story.

I wouldn't bother- the "Look" thing would have turned me off.

But if really want to give it a whirl, try it out with a polaroid back- so no coming and going. You can check the timing more or less for the shutter on the lens by counting (ie. try a one second exposure as you will have an idea if that is right)- check the shutter on the lens by trying aperture changes by engaging the DOF preview button an d looking into the lens as you change the apecture - and check spacing on the back by running film through it if you mark the frames- but you really need to see images to check the lens quality.

Is that a bit pricey for a Kiev?

Hi there,

If you are still looking for a Kiev, you can have a look at mine which is a Kiev 88CM. It is a 6x6 medium format camera. I'll let you try it and show you how it works and have the film developed in an hour, then you decide. I love this camera but I have other 6x6 cameras. You can view samples here:
