Well..
I guess
When people buy one of the top lens from the company, they are expecting perfect performance..
If I am not able to use centain ISO in certain condition because of the light leaks, I would not want to spend over 2000$ for the lens in my opinion.....

What idiot takes photos with the lens cap on and holds their camera to the strobe? I somehow don't think those shots would be keepers.

If you're shooting in studio, most times you're not pointing a strobe directly above your camera other than the odd lighting setup where you may be directly below a strobe or standing in front of a big octo etc. But still, I think the chance of light leak may be very remote. I'm just guessing looking by the video's examples of holding a light source/strobe directly above the distance scale window.

I can see in some rare instances where this "may" be an issue. Take for example a long exposure using a 10stop ND filter and the sun somewhat overhead.

I've seen a lot of shots from my bro-in-law's 24-70 and not one instance of light leak issue.

I suppose people are agitated when they pay lots of money for a product which is not Perfect.

I too find the way to reproduce the fault rather contrived.

Reminds of another forum where the running joke was making fun of people who claimed that they could see weird image errors when the picture was viewed at 2000%, and contrast was set to crazy high, therefore the latest camera was a dud.

I wonder if there is light leak for all Nikon lens through the focus finder? Using the same method.

first, the 24mm f/1.4g was "faulty". now it's the 24-70 f/2.8. I am waiting for the other shoe to drop on the 14-24 and 70-200 to complete the list. anyone?

if this is the extent of the "defect" then i hope they find it on the 70-200 so maybe idiots will sell them off and i can finally afford one. If a photographer is shooting with the lens cap on, i can't imagine he/she will be expecting to get good pictures anyways.

There's already a 'fault' for the new 70-200, a supposed manufacturing flaw in the barrel material inside the lens. Completely nonsensical but people were still whinging about it.

The 14-24 has a fault I am affraid ---- the fault is that it will absolutely drain your pocket book, but amaze you with the quality of the images it captures. sorry to be the bearer of bad news :)

A friend of mine had a rough day when I showed him the video and he confirmed it with his own glass.

I wonder if its covered under warranty?

Well your friend could contact Nikon Canada..
Nikon Korea said that they will do appropriate action for all user with this issue even their warranty is expired.
Apparently, most of 24-70 lens shows light leak under certain circumstance.
Hope this helps ~~

I havent had any issues with it so far .. So I'm not too worried about it ... No biggie :P Ed seem like it hasnt bothered him either .. If it was a common thing happening when normal shooting I would be worried

yup, zero effect on normal shooting.

You might as well say it has problem shooting in fast burst mode in outer space. No real effect.

My 24-70 exhibits the exact problem described in the video, but I really have to go out of my way to have the problem become visible.

Here is a series of images taken with the flash head of an SB-900 aimed at the focus distance window of the lens. This is at full power, first with the flash pressed up against the lens, then moved 10 cm away, then finally put on camera and bounced off a white ceiling about 3 feet above the camera:

Image

Same test, but with bright sunshine approximating the Sunny-16 rule:

My lens has to be set somewhere between 55mm and 56mm. More than a mm difference either way, and the problem no longer happens. This is right around the point on the internal lens cams where the movement of the elements switches directions. There must be some arrangement that opens up a tiny window to allow the light through. It barely happens at 55mm for me, and is completely gone at 54mm and 57mm.

I must have shot close to 40,000 frames with this 24-70/2.8 in the 15 months I've had it, and never noticed a light leak problem in a real photo. So while the problem does exist, I can't see it having any sort of noticeable effect in the real world.

Eh, someone will make some small black stickers with a Nikon logo printed on it. Charge $9.99 each and make a fortune.

I tend to agree with Brian - never seen an issue with mine either under real world conditions.

This sounds like people who've got nothing better to do than complain.

Probably the same folks that love to go out there and take photographs of newspapers pinned/taped to brick walls...
