I bought myself a 24-70 2.8 last night (nikon) and I was doing some testing with it .. (not even sure I did it right) and Im not 100 on the results .. Does anyone have any suggestions? If im spending that coin on a lens I want to make sure its sharp :D

Both were shot on tripod with the self timer at 62mm using ambient light at a shutter of 1/50 for the first shot and 1/6th for the 2nd shot... TO me its looking a bit soft but what do you guys think??

Did you use mirror lock-up? Did you manually focus? Those are some of the things that could affect overall sharpness

no mirror lock up I used Af single point focused on the center of the page .. Although the only thing I could see being an issue is slow shutter even though its on a tripod .. so I took a shot at 800 iso 1/125 hand held

If you look at the sites that do this all the time, don't just take 1 shot at each setting, take 10-15 or more at each setting as you will get some variation based on a large number of factors. i'd also recommend setting/checking your white balance beforehand as that will affect your perception of sharpness due to contrast.

1/50 without mirror lockup on a tripod still doesn't rule out vibration.

Why don't you use flash?

Yeah, take camera shake out of the equation by having a shutter speed of 1/200 or higher in a well lit room. From the charts you posted it doesn't look tack sharp but try to do some more tests with the suggestions provided.
