Saw this post on craigslist and was intrigued. They've posted several times which annoys the spam-conscious side of me. But the student part of me is curious about an AC-powered kit for $300.

Too good to be true? Am I better of with an Orbis or RayFlash kit instead?

I'm happy with my Orbis. Add a $30 ebay L bracket and you're all set. If you AC-powered, Alienbees are the way to go.

It looks like it is a constant light not a flash. Typically these things are not bright enough.

If you read the specs, it's a 65w 5400k non-flicker fluorescent (equivalent to 300w incandescent).

Also the intentional motion blur in some of the example photos is a bit of a giveaway.

But I think the biggest giveaway is the fact it's also for video use.

yeah you are right. My advice steer clear! or build a cheap one yourself would not be hard.

I bought one of these, but haven't had a chance to really use it on a shoot yet:

I've always wanted to play with a ring flash, but never really had an excuse to buy one. I guess if I ever got a serious macro rig, I'd probably get one.

I've used my friend's Profoto ring flash. It's awesome but it doesn't take long for the look to get worn out. My friend says he's only used it a couple of times last year. Might be more economical to rent one when you need that look.

Thx for all the feedback! I'll keep an eye out for the Orbis. At full price, it's almost the price of a new flash unit for a piece of plastic (albeit a highly engineered one).

Btw, what's the diff btw video and still lights? Not really well versed in video stuff at all.

It's just another way of saying continuous vs strobe lighting.

It's been discussed search in the "Gear" forum or in "photography in general"

Search for "continuous light"
