Well, it's about time they added more OS lenses to their lineup. For you BIF'ers, the new 50-500mm OS should be very nice. I'm personally most interested in their 85mm f/1.4, which I hope will be as good as their 50mm f/1.4.

I know eh! Even Tamron (who doesn't have any HSM/USM type lenses still) has their version of IS.

I'm crossing my fingers that the 85mm f1.4 is a winner. MTF charts shows that it's supposedly damn sharp but need proof. :D

I've got the non-stabilized 50-500 and that thing is already a beast.

why is the 17-50 OS and not the 85? i never really understood why they would add OS IS VR to short lenses..

does hsm mean the new AF motor? like af-s?

It has Sigma's version of USM ie. HSM.

IS/VR/OS/AS/OIS/SSS/WTF is useful on short lenses as well, and for the same reasons: slower shutter speeds. I very much appreciated my Canon 17-55/2.8 IS even at the wider focal lengths. You can get sharp shots more reliably with IS activated at 1/5 s at 17 mm, for example.

HSM is Sigma's version of USM/SWM. It's been around for a while now.

I'm interested in the 85 1.4 as well. I wonder how much it would cost. On par with the Sigma 50 1.4? So around 700 you think?

The OS part is particularly interesting when combined with the in body SR of Pentax. I think the Pentax mount of the lens is not out yet and I will wait for some hands on report.
I have pretty good experience with Sigma 24-60mm F2.8 EX and I got the last new one from Henry at around $250. Some people complain about Sigma Q C issue. Maybe I am lucky

Old fashion thought: the less electronics in the lens the better.
Electronics should be in the body and upgrading is straightforward. Just junk it.
I still have lens in the 80s working fine. And I doubt if all these OS/HSM lenses will ever last half of its expected lifespan.
My other Sigma lens has 5 yrs warranty. See if this applies to the new bunch

Many Sigma lenses, like my 50-500 F4.5-6.3 and 30mm F1.4, actually carry a 10 year warranty in Canada through Gentec.

10 yrs is good enough. Plasma or LCD TVs and a lot of other gismos do not last that long.
