Has anyone used the new Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM? From what I've read, it gets good reviews compared to the Canon and Nikon 24-70. What's your experience?

It is big and heavy but a really nice lens. The IQ is great. the focus on my copy is excellent. Just buy this in canada if you want a warrantee as gentec will not honour the warrantee outside.

I got the sigma 24-70/nikon hsm last week and so far it's been great. I missed this range when I went from DX->FF and Had to sell off the 17-55.

I can't do a comparison since I never owned the canon/nikon 24-70. But for my purposes I don't see any problems with it.

1. Focus is quick, I do notice it hunts in low lighting - but the nikon (17-55) did that also.
2. 82mm thread OMG... I'm starting to leave the filters off now - so not a problem.
3. Colour/Contrast - is great, but then the d700 sensor > d90 sensor :)
3. sharpness/focus - seems to be dead on at 70@2.8

Now price wise - it's pretty expensive. mine was a used copy from the US which saved me a few hundred dollars.

My suggestion would be - if you don't need the HSM and want to save some $ get the non HSM version.

There is also an older sigma 24-70 that is the "DF" model (box says DG DF) stay away from that one since it's a precursor to the current EX DG (box says EX DG).

I have a friend who has the non hsm he does not like it. Always a focus problem. I bought mine used made sure it was from canada. Got a great deal on it.

What I found interesting from googling (not to threadjack) is that sigma/gentec will honour warranty as long as you have a canadian bill of sale, and 10yrs is a long time!

Three different 24-70's from a thread somewhere else - all taken 70@2.8.
1. Been taken to sigma a few times for sharpness correction.
2. This one is 5yrs old
3. My HSM

I'm not sure about the HSM lens, but my non-HSM lens can take a 67mm filter with a step-down ring without vignetting on a Canon crop body:

I also tried holding a 58mm filter in front of it before I bought the 67mm step down, so actually with a crop you don't need to worry about the 82mm size.
